That just plain sucks. Can you just replace the tank itself?

ok.

FYI or anyone else winterizing : When you winterize you have to close the inlet valve ( by-pass valve ) to the water heater before you start pumping the pink stuff by using that tag end of hose into the rv anti-freeze bottle. The campers water pump is used to do this and the pump gets protected as well.
If you don't close the by-pass valve to the water heater you will fill the water heater with 6 gals. of rv anti-freeze.
Its ok to have a little bit of water in the bottom of the water heater . It will freeze at the bottom and not harm anything. Its basically a thermos bottle , only more expensive.

Is that hose the tag end of the winterize set up ? Isn't that the hose that goes into the bottle of rv anti-freeze , to pump it thru the system when winterizing ? The blue decal says , "winterize" .

Yes it is. Wife remembered that about 5 minutes after I posted... Just can't figure out why the hot water tank blew up sitting on Galveston Island, Tx all winter...

I did everything right, closed the input valve, opened the bypass valve, drained the hot water tank and left it with the drain plug removed, filled the unit with pink, and in the spring when I went to clean it out the check valve on the output of the hot water tank had lost it's seal. The pink in the lines went through the output of the HWT in reverse, and dumped pink into the HWT and out the drain plug.

It took about five or six full fills and flushes before I could think the HWT didn't have any pink left in it.

DSeckt,

I just went thru the same thing this spring. I remembered to close the by-pass when I winterized, just forgot to drain the fresh water out of the tank. I "noticed" the problem when I filled up for our first trip out this spring. I guess the good news is that the water heater is fairly easy to replace. Best of luck with the replacement!
