I went against my better judgement. My dear wife won the argument on staying at a state park (for the last time) with her brother and family in two different campers. We had our share of bad experiences in the past with state parks, of which I vowed never to stay at again.
It was 11:30 pm and we had already went to bed for the evening. It was a long day and we were all tired. We were woke by the sound of a old clacking diesel with the silencer ring removed from the turbo. You know the whistling sound, every time they hit the gas. Well it was all coming from the front of our fiver were our truck was parked, about 10 feet away from the road, plenty of clearance for people to maneuver and get down the street. Or so we thought. So the voices and truck headlights and the whistling truck went on for about 15 minutes.
Then there it was .... the knock on the front door. The dog busts out of bed barking it's head off. So I get out of bed in my briefs stumbling trying to find my pants and a shirt, the knocking on the door the whole time, dog barking, I yell just a dang minute.I stumble to the front door and there is this lady. Can you move your truck we don't want to hit it. I said did you realize it was 11:45 and you woke us from our sleep. Then the fake crying starts, I'm very sorry sir, we don't want to hit your truck.
Well I'm wondering why they were having trouble, until I saw the setup. They had a 42' quad bunk that they were trying to fit in a spot for a 30' camper. They couldn't make in in the site like it was designed for, so they were trying to fit it in on a 45 degree angle and there were trees in their way. So of course it was too easy to just wake the neighbors at almost midnight because they couldn't clearly read the trailer specifications online when they made reservations for that site.
So I'm pissed, I go to move the truck so I could get back to bed and put a end to the ruckus. They have everyone in the area outside of their tents and campers watching the freak show. So as I'm driving around the corner to wedge my truck behind my fiver I come to a truck and boat half blocking the road. So I have to drive half way onto the shoulder to get around it. I'm cussing up a storm by now. Keep this boat in mind.
So I get parked and back in the fiver and into bed. Keep in mind it's know after midnight. So we hear the usual sounds of getting pulled in and set up and 10 minutes later they finally shut the truck off after pulling out from under the fiver. Finally!! I can get back to sleep.
Now 15 minutes goes by and this clown fires up the clanking whistle truck (older Ford) ... again. By this time I'm steaming. So what happens next took me to the edge. It's every bit of 1:00 am. This clown now decides to park this truck were mine was (originally) near our bedroom slideout. I'm like, oh no your not! So here we go again. Fumble for pants and I just left the shirt off, shorts practically falling off. Out the front door ready for battle. Now, remember the truck and boat blocking the road, well it's the other family members with them trying to squeeze the truck, boat and trailer on the other side of their fiver. So I holler out, you better move this truck or I will. One of the girls say's we will as soon as we get the boat backed in. Now here come the first woman who knocked on my door with the fake tears. Sir we owe you a case of beer or whatever you want, just let us know. I said lady, I don't want any stinking beer, maybe you people could grow some brains.
So back off to my camper I go. They couldn't fit the boat in next to them so off he went to launch it in the campground marina. The truck finally gets moved.
This was the main event. I won't even go into the other bonehead people we saw this weekend.
Never, ever, ever, never will I do it again!! Rant off!! Honestly, some people were not born with a full deck.
I completely understand your frustration, but don't get the connections to state parks. We camp in state parks throughout Ohio and have never had any of these issues. I really don't mean to be argumentative, but we really love our experiences with large sites in beautiful settings in Ohio's state parks. Please explain.
I am rather fond of the TN and GA state parks. Perhaps you should camp there? Actually we prefer the public parks. Maybe it's just the state you are in.
You should see the nutcases that park next to us. One put a rather nice hole in the side of his rubber roof because he pulled into the tree across from the site... twice. And then he hit the tree leaving two days later. The following week someone hit the tree again... twice. The tree is NOT in the way. Some folks just can't drive their rigs.
Some people complain about our North Carolina State Parks locking the gate at night. But I like it, it keeps people in that are in and the ones that are out, can't come in till morning.
Your are correct. Most people can deal with it as I during there normal daily affair. It's when people who have zero consideration for others ... you know ... the me attitude. As I stated in my post, they could clearly see when the reserved the site online their camper would not fit. I check it online myself and the site they were in was for a 30' camper.
Yep, when you wake me up and everyone else for stupid stunts like that ... I say it like it is.
I prefer government parks. In fact I stay in them almost exclusively. In the S.E., it's common for the park gates to be locked at sundown. Sure, a late arrival can call ahead and acquire the combination or gate code. But, I've never had a neighbor come in after quiet hours. Just lucky, I guess. I'd be aggravated too.
