I am a proud owner of a 2011 1500 5.3 Silverado. This is not a post to have people tell me get the 6.2 or get a diesel. I'm just looking for some happy 5.3 people to share upgrades they have done to their truck. Either for towing purposes or gas milage either way I consider it an upgrade. I love the truck, it tows my Zepplin great, but I'm always looking to make things better. Things like an LT tire instead of a P tire. Cool air intakes. Tonneau cover... does it really help? Anything really, just curious what people have done.
Keep on Truckin'

Hello,
I haave a 5.3L in my 2005 GMC Yukon XL. We tow a Jayco 25RKS with it.
We have taken it to the midwest from Arizona 4 times and it performed great. I have recently drove it on a 5000 mile road trip without towing from Arizona through Yellowstone, Rapid City SD and fishing in MN and then back to AZ.
I did add a K&N cold air intake system before this last trip and I did feel the slight horsepower increase. The sound is very different.
The fuel milage on the last roadtrip talked about in previous paragraph was 18.5 mpg over 5000 miles.
We will be towing the trailer within the next couple of weeks into the mountains and I will post again on how the new cold air intake system performed climing the mountains. I am looking forward to haveing more HP at 7000 ft.

You should have bought a diesel...kidding . I have the 2009 version of your truck and like it. Handles well while towing. The only thing I have added is a trifold tonneau cover and Weather Tec mats http://www.weathertech.com/ or http://www.weathertech.ca/ . They keep the floor celan as they are like adding rubber flooring to the truck and clean up well. I will be interested to see what others have done.

Congratulations on the new truck. I wouldn't even CONSIDER towing without my tonneau cover. Really handy for keeping generator, tools and dozens of other things dry and secure while on the road. About the only way they will make any improvement in FUEL economy though is to prop them up to act as a wind deflector (I've actually done that a time or two and it does work) but doing that now means your stuffin the back is no longer being protected from ???
Good luck and happy travels / Skip

Hmmmm .... another person who installed splash guards. I have not seen many domestic trucks of any make with splash guards.
I have the HD towing mirrors (best upgrade on a TV), Hypertech Max Energy regular tune, Undercover tonneau cover, GM drop-in bedliner, Amp Research flip-out bed extender, and moulded splash guards -- aside from the other mods you see in the picture of my truck in the signature link below.

Lots of 'em up here where it snows and road crews use tons of salt to melt it all winter long. Dealer added them along with the tonneau and bedliner as part of my deal. I agree about the mirrors - well worth the purchase.
