We have Verizon.
On the freeway corridors (I-90, I-94, I-15) through Montana, the coverage isn't too bad. Off the freeways, on the 2 lane highways, there is usually coverage near towns and in towns. Between towns, don't expect much.
In the mountains in the Western half of the state, don't expect much.
My Tracfone, when I had it activated, used the Verizon network mostly.
There was one place near Harlowton where, within the space of about 150 feet, I could go from Roaming, to good service, to no service!
IMO, a cell phone is not a good emergency communications device.

Another happy Verizon customer. There are many times we will have both cell and internet service where other campers in the campground have nothing. Wouldn't have anything else.

mowermechanic reminds me that be sure your phone has the ability to lock out roaming so you don't unknowingly get stuck with unwanted charges. you can evidently start a call not-roaming, then if you are driving it will switch to roaming without you knowing about it. and if you live or are near to a division point, don't know which it will be.
also getting different plans sounds like a good idea to me, and of course one should go to the web and check out coverage maps before buying any service.

Most companies and plans now don't worry about "roaming" anymore for billing. At least Verizon doesn't. Most ofthem now "offer" no roaming charges no matter where you are. Very few still do I think. The charges come when you go over your minutes or data plan allotment ect. Remember if you are Verizon you can have Skype Mobile and use that as type of texting/calling thing. Verizon has a deal with Skype that you should not get charged for the minutes using it or the data that it uses. Of course double check but the last I looked that deal with them was still there. That's how we get to talk to our youngest for nothing since he is right now stationed over in Korea and our granddaughter in Virgina whenever. Oh she is now 4 and knows how to connect to anyone that she wants to talk to on Skype from the computer, lol.
My husband has traveled all over with his work with Verizon and in alot of the plants when he's on the phone the responce from the workers are "You must have Verizon cause nothing else works in here".

We have AT&T for the last month and are very happy
We travelled from Quebec Canada to Wyoming at this time and it worked 99% of the time
Just on some rural roads did we not get service and I must say that they were the only ones that would offer us service for our own IPhone 4
Verizon have the own CDMA but this is not what we have
We purchased our IPHONE directly from Apple store in Quebec, Canada when they first came out

We've been in the boonies of SW Colorado this summer - away from the interstates, and have always gotten a signal with Verizon - even at 9200' EL around Crested Butte. We're constantly amazed.

Six years on the road and traveling everywhere; it's been unusual not to have Verizon service and 3G wireless on our Aircard. Customer service has been very good, and there are stores everywhere.

Verizon for us too...we're sitting in a campground in Rhode Island, where NO ONE has service, so bad most of the seasonals have land lines....with the help of a Wilson Truck antenna and booster...I'm sitting here using my aircard to write this. Don't have a tether cable for the phone, or that would be working too.
This is only the second time in six years we've had any real trouble getting and holding some sort of Verizon signal...works for us!

I don't like contracts but used to have Verizon and did end up getting them for internet. I use Consumer Cellular for my phone service. NO CONTRACT. Internet available on phone, but looks slow. We have used these phones all over the place and in several where the biggies did not work. They are excellent to deal with and very helpful when you have problems. Not what I ever got with a high priced contract. We have 3 phones on the plan and frequently pay unger $50 a month for phones which are free or nearly so.

We use straight talk with the Verizon network. Serves us well. Use Millenicom for data. It the 4g hot spot Samsung wireless unit, also on Verizon network. Used Sprint before. Verizon network is better. This setup works good for us and not on a contract.
