I usually stop or proceed very slowly as it is difficult to determine the condition of the crossing. Some crossings will loosen your teeth!!!!

IDman - Don’t feel bad. I was about to ask what MOW was too until I saw EMD_DRIVER’s post. Guess you missed that. We learn something every day.

BTW, it never occurred to me to stop at ungated RR crossings, and I never have. Can't believe I wouldn't hear the horn of an approaching train.

There is a crossing by my house that has only about 30 feet between the tracks and road/stopsign. I always need to watch for traffic before I think about crossing and when I do start crossing with no cars in the area I keep right on going and make my right turn. I`m technically running a stop sign, but I do stop before the tracks.

Thanks Terry, I should have added also that this is only when I have the trailer with me!

AC on Stero up. Good chance you won't. Todays vehicles are very quiet inside. And they taught us to stop for RR crossings in Driver's Ed.

I had a job for many years where I was required by federal law to stop at RR grade crossings, except the marked "exempt" ones. It became such a habit that I still find myself doing it when driving a car now and them. Just make sure you turn on your hazard warning lights when approaching the grade crossing, and keep them on until you are back up to reasonable speed. My biggest fear was on foggy nights, or during heavy snow, that someone would rear end me.

I can take you to not just one, but many, grade crossings with Flashing Lights where many drivers have been killed over the years because they did not stop or listen for the horn of the approaching train. Even on Christmas eve, they could not hear it. Hard one for that particular family, as they lost three members.

I also can not believe the stupid thing that I have seen people do at RR grade crossings over the years.

I didn't mean to imply that I don't stop if red lights are flashing. All I meant was that I don't routinely stop at all grade crossings as gas tankers are required to do.

Any time you find a crossing like that, complain to the city/town/state. They are responsible for the condition of the crossings and paying for necessary repairs.
