I've got my first radio show of the year coming up end of next week in PA (three days). I'm replacing all the old blinds and my wife made new curtains for it. It's going in for an oil change and check over on Monday. It started right up on the first turn of the key this Spring (after charging the batteries). Still gets too cold here to flush out the RV antifreeze and add water but I don't need the toilet or water next week as they have bathrooms and showers there.

I want to replace the steering box and get new tires on it this year. I figure about $1,200 for both. I have been thinking about a new paint job but money is tight so the paint job will probably have to wait. Besides, people get out of my way when they see it coming.

Very nice, can imagine after a redo of decor and some paint how sharp it will become.

Can you tell me what makes you think the steering box is bad?

What is the mileage on it?

Normally, the steering box is not a big issue on that model, but the ball joints and other steering components are --- even at very low mileage I have seen ball joints go.

That might save you quite a bit of money.

Are the tires over 7 years old? If so, consider replacing them even if they have plenty of tread.

The B is on a Ford Econoline E250 chassis with 84,000 miles on it. Not bad for a 1985. The tires have lots of tread but I don't know how old they are. I'd rather have tires I know the history and age of.

The steering box leaks so it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Front end has been inspected and is tight so no problems there.

Mine is on a chevy chassis and has 81.000miles and i had to totally rebuild the frontend,,,everything!!,, was shot and went back with better than stock parts but steering box was fine!!
Ive still got acouple tires to buy and going to put rear brakes, shocks and check bearings and axle seals but close to done other than an inverter an house batteries!

Old radios, a very neat unit! Hard to tell from the pix, but a good cleaner-wax & some elbow grease may be all the roof needs to bring it back to life. I like plain old Turtle Wax, tho' depending on how bad yours is, you may need a more aggressive & abrasive product like rubbing or buffing compound. 3M used to make a fiberglass cleaner, but I never got good results from using it. And a second on John's advice to check with a boat shop.

Tires... yours may or may not need replacing based on age. There's a week & year date code molded into the sidewall. I think most tire maker's sites have info on finding and reading it. Do check that they're the correct load range, probably LR 'E'.

The tires are LT235/85R16

It looks like the date code is 1802. If that's April 2002 then it's definitely time to replace them.

Probably a door post sticker on driver's side stating what size & load range that the van was designed for. Yep, sounds like it's replacement time.

I specify 'not more than 6 months old' when I buy RV tires, and the tire dealers have met that requirement each time. Last time, I got two that were only a month old.

I think I'm going to replace them before my trip next week.
Been calling around and found a wide range of prices.

Best for the money around here seems to be the Sigma Stampede model by Cooper. I've found bad reviews on almost everything I was quoted but since these only get about 1,200 miles a year on them I don't think it will make much difference which ones I put on there as long as they are not too noisy and they meet the load rating.

As people on here know, I am the weight / safety / hazard police....

Any tire used in RV (heavy load) is too old if it is past 7 years from date of manufacture.

The rigs we run are so unwieldy (tall, not necessarily balanced) that rolling it is not hard.

A blowout can come without warning.

The old tires can be given away --- to someone else riding an empty van in the city where the risks are a lot lower.

If the spare is old as well, pick the freshest one / best shape to be your future spare unless you want to buy 5.

When you buy new tires, be sure you check the date code to get fresh tires.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11

I got good deals from Walmart / Sams Club / Costco, etc.

Decent service / support replacement policy.

A check of their manufacturer code tells you who made it.

Do stay away from tires not made in reputable places.

US, Japan, S. Korea, Germany are OK...
