I just sold my 4.7 Ram, and I always hated hearing the above advice. But you know what? They are right on the money. I dumped a bunch of wasted time and money on it, just to later upgrade anyway. I had 4.56 gears, shorty headers, free-flowing exhaust, intake, tuner, and it still towed poorly. Not worth it.

Save your money for a Hemi Ram 2500. But in the mean time, keep your 4.7 Ram maintained with fresh fluids and filters and perhaps a tune up. This will ensure optimum towing performance until you drop the cash for another Ram that will serve you well.

That is great first hand info from someone who's been there, done that. Thanks for sharing. I'll drive my 4.7 until I can afford something else and get the money wasting ideas right out of my head!
It's not the worst truck by any means so I'll just keep it as is.

That sounds like good advice and a good plan to me.
Here's another former owner of a 4.7L Ram that shelled out the bucks for 4.56 gears and a few other mods only to be disappointed. Under 30 mph, the 4.56s were awesome, but above that, the cooling system was taxed to the max, the gas mileage stunk, and it still couldn't get out of its own way without winding it way up. The 4.7 just isn't up to towing much more than a pop-up.
I traded the Ram off for the E-350 V10 almost dead even and have never regretted it. More room, awesome towing manners, and slightly better mileage under load. Since then, we've acquired the Hemi Durango and it tows the camper even better than the van, but has less room for "stuff".
My advice it to find a truck with a bigger engine. The 1/2 ton Hemi Ram will do exactly what you want for far less money than modding up the 4.7 will cost you.

I'd cruise online classifieds for a used tuner, should be able to find one for a couple hundred bux, going to be the most bang for the buck.
I slapped a HyperTech on my DW's somewhat tired Expedition, spruced that thing right back to attention. Gained some MPG too
My CTD powered Meggy doesn't need such attention
