Speaking as one who lived in Palm Beach County for 30 years, pay the $25.
I'll up you by 10 years (yes, 40) and I now spend winters there. Too much of the Turnpike is still only two lanes/direction and the traffic on it can be just as bad or worse. They added two lanes in each direction.
Anyone lived in South Florida for 50 years?
Pay the money and take the turnpike.

We also prefer the turnpike - especially if you plan ahead and send away for the SunPass for the tolls - you get a discount off what they charge you if they just take your license plate picture, and you can't use cash on the southern part. The turnpike also has the advantage of easy on and off service plazas, but you usually pay a little more for the fuel.

RS, I see where you live near Ocala, been down there in the last 8 months?
OP, if you had asked about this two winters ago, I'd agree with using the turnpike BUT I used it almost daily last winter with several trips to Miami. The added lanes and no construction changed everything. Go ahead and spend the money, not sure why I even bothered to post with up to date info.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Zip across to the west coast and the go back to the east on US 41thru the Everglades. Gators and birds everywhere.
Turn right on FL 997 to US 1 in Florida City.
Good road, light traffic and good scenery.

This is a viable option but more driving and miles unless you are coming across the state anyway. 997 can be a little slow sometimes but it is not that long.

My suggestion is to stay on 95 until the Jupiter, Florida exit (northern Palm Beach County). Then get on the Turnpike. The interchange is about 100 yards west of 95.
Don't even think about taking I-95 south of Jupiter, even on Sunday.

Went from Orlando to Marathon using hte turnpike the entire way and it was a breeze. Even saw a couple of nice, huge gators in the ditch along the way, so make sure your dog has peed before you get on it.

I dont live there and cant speak to the "normal" traffic issues, I just visit the Keys once a year. All I can say is I did the end of 95 route once, and never again. I get on the Turnpike at Ft. Pierce. Couple of years ago I got a stick on Sunpass at a CVS and now go non stop.

We have gone from Tampa area to Key West a few times. We did Pirates in Paradise there for about 6 yrs or so. Only once did we go the highway and during the day. Every other time we took 41 across and missed Miami completely. We made it in better time than all the others the were convinced that the only way to go is the highway. While you are not going from that direction I would still say to miss Miami if you can.
I would also suggest timing it so that you are driving thru the Keys late at night. Less traffic and if there was an accident on the 7 Mile Bridge it will usually be cleared up by the time you get there. I can't tell you how many times we missed being stuck in traffic because we took the night route for this particular bit of travel.
