We are in Cody spending 4 days/or do we need more to do the sites but will leave with the intentions of going to Glacier NP in Montana. What is the best route out of WY. Either a 2 lane or Interstate.
Also can you recommend campgound/s enroute or while there.
Our favorite route to Glacier begins from West Yellowstone and is basically a single days trip (if you want it to be).
Highway 191 to Belgrade then West on I-90 to US 287 into Helena. Take US 12 to Montana 141 - Montana 200 - Montana 83 to Kalispell. There are a number of campgrounds and a few RV parks along Montana 83 if you decide to make a two day trip out of it. We like the route because it's a pleasant drive with pretty scenery and light traffic. Brings you into the West side of the park and Apgar Campground inside the park usually doesn't fill up until late in the afternoon. Lots of RV Parks just OUTSIDE of the park at West Glacier and surrounding area.
Good luck and enjoy the trip / Skip

Don't know if you are starting from Cody or Yellowstone, last year we went up 191 from W. Yell to Belgrade, while it was a beautiful drive through the river canyon, it was a little intense for me. The truck traffic and the locals think the speed limit signs are for the birds, I was pushed to go faster than I wanted to, the pull-overs are short and unannounced, however as Skip said it is beautiful. This year we took 287/359 to I-90, they are good 2 lane roads running through MT ranch land, an easy pull and no traffic. We overnited at a CG near Anaconda Mt. a country CG but very adequate, then went on to Glacier via US-93. US-93 is an easy drive that goes along Flathead Lake to Kalispell MT. Good traveling whatever Rte you take, don't let others push you if you take 191, it is beautiful and should be traveled at least once ...Be Safe ...John

Skip's is not bad, but if you have anyone interested in Museums or Dinosaur's don't go that way. Up to Bozeman and Museum of the Rockies(great Dino), up to Helena and Montana State Museum (but no Dino's), then Great Falls and Charles Russell Museum( no Dino')s and the Lewis and Clark Center( no Dinos). Then Choteau and Old Trail Museum(Dino's), then Bynam and Two Medicine Dinosaur Center (yup), then Browning and Museum of the Plains Indian (no dinos)
The other problem with Skip's route, is if you have a fear-of-heights, it will put you crossing Going to the Sun on the cliff side. Every day the Rangers have to drive someone off that road, as they get too scared to drive. If you go east to west you are on the "up-side" and have little time driving on the edge of a cliff.
2008 F350SD V10 with an 2012 Arctic Fox 29-5E When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.
In Helena I stay at the Lincoln Road RV Park and in Great Falls I stay at Dick's RV Park. Both are reasonable with not a lot of frills. No pool or playground, but good basic clean campgrounds. I grew up along the Rocky Mtn front in Montana. I will not stay in or around Browning or Heart Butte.
If you have a passport you might want to go up to Waterton. It is just across the border from Glacier into Canada.
Take a red bus tour over the Going to the Sun Highway. It is the best way to view the park without the hassle of driving on some very steep roads.
Have a good trip.

The Nugget RV park in St. Regis MT was real nice. And if you have time I would highly reccommend Lewis and Clark Cavrens State Park near Whitehall, MT. The Cave tour was great and they also have dry camping in the the park.

Thank you for any info Marcia
If you're talking about Just Cody, 4 days should be enough, IF you're talking about Cody, Yellowstone, & Grand Tetons, 2 weeks would not be too long.

We are in Cody and appreciate the previous info but I still have worries about the routes mentioned with a 40' MH and Jeep Toad. Taking 191 we would have to go thru the park and not sure how the rig or my nerves could handle it.
I was given a route of 120 out of Cody which turns into 72 in MT and then 308 across to 212 at Red Lodge. That way we by pass the Beartooth Pass which we did yesterday and would never ever take an RV that route even though we did see some Class Cs and small TTs. Is that portion of 212 non mountainous? Then onto I 90. Was told a portion of 72 was under construction and that is why the 308 diversion. We traveled that route yesterday out of Red Lodge and was an easy travel home to Cody. My concern is going north on 212.
