Most times we hook up and soon hear the sound of water flowing in to the ice maker and a little later the crash as ice drops down into the tray. On occasion, like last week, no ice. It's like there is a hidden switch that has been turned off! Of course I dropped the bale in the tray but that had no effect! Any ideas where to start? Thanks in advance, Bob

Ice makers are controlled by a thermostat and if the freezer does not get cold enough to open the thermostat then no ice will be released. The thermostat is inside the ice maker and usually set to open around 5-0 degrees.

Our Norcold icemaker is prone to having pieces of ice stick in the mechanism instead of being cleanly released. Check on top of and behind the mechanism to see if there is a small piece stuck there.

If you believe your freezer is cold enought, try filling the tray with water using a small cup. Most times this will get it to start cycling.

Correct me if iam wrong but ice makers go through a cycle and if u shut your fridge off 1/2 way through the cycle does it not have to finsh the cycle when u restart your fridge the next time? Before it refills and starts over.
also Your not going to get any ice in the first 4-5 hours because it will take that long for the fridge to get cold enough.

Ice makers! Cheap little things. I've been servicing appliances for over 20 years, and will say that I swear manufacturers make em cheap so they can sell replacements. Depending on the style you have, it may need to be jump started when you start it up. Others have a cheap little tab that activates the bail switch. It breaks off easy, and there isn't enough there to glue anything back on to activate the switch. However in your case, I think you will just have to jump start it.

Here is a link with the directions.

Pull off the outside access door to the fridge. This where the small pump is typically located; make sure that it hasn't come unplugged. Another thing is make sure your water supply is turned on. If you are not connected to city water, you need to leave the water pump on.
