Is he putting his foot on the brake pedal? It will not come out of PARK unless you step on the brake pedal. May sound to simple but I had to ask. I have seen this happen to people before.

If your brake lights do not work as well then I would bet your brake light switch needs to be replaced this is the same switch that operates the safety for taking it out of park unless your brake is applied. Had the same problem. Switch was I think $6 at autozone but a real bear to put on.
Good luck

Check the wires for your brake light switch , A friend had a wire unplug and the motor home would not come out of park.

Thanks for the suggestions...This morning he went out and tried
a combo of jiggling the key, turning the steering wheel both ways
and something must have clicked because he got it out of park.
He had tried that yesterday but must have not hit the right combination. We need to gas it up for our week-end jaunt and I
hope this won't happen again in the gas station!

QUOTE;There is a solinoid on the shifter colum that releases the shifter when the brake lights are on. SO if the brake light fuse is bad, the solinoid will not energize, and it will not shift out of park. CHeck the brake lights first
X2 The same thing happened to me a few years ago and it was a fuse Jim

I had the same thing happen - and I was blocking up most of a small town Post Office parking lot for hours. Good Sams ERS came, did a couple of things to the steering column, and it never gave me another problem. He didn't replace a thing - and he said he could have told me how to do it over the phone (but he wouldn't have been paid). I'm sorry I can't remember the sequence of moves he made. Then, he refused to take money for adjusting my slipping fan belt - no small chore.
For a first Good Sams call, it was wonderful.

My guess is that his foot was not pushing firmly on the brake peddle.
