Hi, I have a small 6X10 ft utillity trailer that needs new tires. I can get auto tires for the same price as trailer tires. The auto tires sound like a better deal but am I missing anything here why I shouldnt do this ? Thanks for any thoughts.

Buy car takeoffs for $25 as you will never wear even them out. I own a bunch of trailers of all size and takeoffs is all I run.

This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Look at the load rating and make sure you are comparing apples to apples. The max load should be listed on the sidewall, and trailer tires TEND to be rated a little higher than car tires in similar sizes.

I just sold a 10' tilt deck single axle trailer that I had for years. I kept P tires on the trailer as it was required to run I-44 near me at legal 75 mph speeds. Before ST tires were invented car tires (P) and truck tires were all we had. (LT)

Just so you'll know but a P tire mounted on a trailer is required by fed regs to have its capacity derated by 10 percent. A 1500 lb capacity P tire would be derated to 1350 lbs capacity.

Now there is a new one for me. Do you have a link for that, Jim?

This is just my opinion, as long as the tires have a weight rateing for as much or more than the axle you should be ok.

JIM; can you give the fed reg that saids a P tire on a trailer has to be derated by 10%, thanks.

"Can I use car tires on my trailer ?"

Yes, you certainly may do so if you wish.
It is, after all, YOUR trailer.

Quote:

S4.2.2.2 When passenger car tires are
installed on an MPV, truck, bus, or
trailer, each tire’s load rating is reduced
by dividing it by 1.10 before determining,
under S4.2.2.1, the sum of
the maximum load ratings of the tires
fitted to an axle.

This comes from 571.110 tire and rim selection for vehicles under 10k GVWR. Sectin 571.120 says the same for vehicles over 10k GVWR.

Ya' gotta remember when these regs were written we had many many different P or car tire sizes from a B78-13 up to a N/75-15 with many 50/60 and 70 series car tires with very tall sidewalls. Todays car tires with their wide wheel requirements and low sidewall height may not make a good tire for trailer use.

Depends on the load rating of the tires vs the load your carrying I expect. But if the tires are the same price, why not get the trailer tires to start with????
