This was one sweet installation, and I'm sure you could do something similar with a 5er. Lots of information that may be helpful to you.

Good luck

Cameras at the back and sides of a FW are becoming more popular. I was just at a rally and saw a couple. The ones I saw were hard wired because of some concern of the distance from the transmitter in the trailer to the receiver at the truck dash. The rear camera was installed in the middle rear roof light slot. They removed the light and replaced with the camera. Ran the wires down to the floor and then under the frame. The side camera's were mounted toward the front and wired to the closet and down to the frame. They seemed to work well and the owners loved them. I understand some brands are offring back-up cameras on FW as an option.

Any help in backing up is good. I am looking at wireless, but not to the point of buying yet.

With all these cameras when do you have time to look at the road. Seems like another item to distract the driver. Back up camera might have some usefull purpose but I prefer DW in back guiding me.

A friend of ours put 3 cameras on his 40', tandem-dual, FW (can't remember the brand), one in the rear and one on each side, just behind the front overhang. They're all hard-wired into about a 10 or 12" screen in his M2. He has marks on the screen calibrated for where vehicles are on each side and says they're great for helping change lanes. He glances at the screen, checking the rear and the side he wants to move, then scans his side-mirror, then moves over if it's clear. He ran a separate pig-tail just for the cameras. The 2 front cameras are in conformal pods, about 4' off the ground and painted to match the color-scheme. Sweet set-up, for sure. I do =not= know if it was a complete system or he mixed-and-matched equipment.

I have a camera on the rear of the TV and one on the rear of the FW. The one on the rear of the TV is to get lined up to hook-up. The one on the rear of FW is for backing into a site and to see if anyone is right behind me when going down the road. When backing into a site, the DW is outside with a hand-held CB giving directions. I stop backing if I can't see her either in the mirrors or the camera. Both cameras are wired. It works for us.

I personally have never installed a rear view camera behind a 5th wheel, I do however have one on my pop-up with a wireless transmitter to my truck cab.

When I purchased my camera system I started here Backup Cameras.

It had some good points, and helped me make my choice with a wireless unit, even though I only had about 15ft to go I like the simplicity of the wireless module over the wired.

I have one in the hitch of the dually. the other is mounted high on teh back of the 5er. As we have a storage bay on the rear it was pretty simple to install. Both are hardwired. I added a second connector in the bed next to the 7 way. I had already mounted a laptop in the truck with a 10" touchscreen so I have both cameras connected to that for display.

The one on the truck helps me see under the 5er if I need to. The one on the back makes changing lanes so much easier. I can see 3 lanes wide at any given time. Vehicles on either side appear in teh side mirrors just as they leave the camera view.

Nutty Texans, The rear view camera is really just an electronic rear view mirror, which I have been in cars and trucks for years.
