I run a TS 6 position Chip. I like the fast idle setting for cold warm ups and run the 50 HP setting all the time. Get 20 mpg with it empty and have 4:10 gearing.
If you want to add some power and not affect emissions. Snow Performance Methanol injection would do the job and lower egt.
Diesel World is currently doing an article comparing Methanol injection to Urea. From what I have seen so far Methanol injection reduces NOX and other emissions pretty good. Not sure when all the testing will be published.

No, I've had a BC emissions test.
You cannot add 50 or 100 hp or whatever without affecting emissions, period.
CA doesn't measure emissions on diesels (yet). They do a visual, OBDII check, and visible smoke test.
Exactly.
Hey fisherguy, people do move. Born and raised in S Cali over 50 years so I have had a smog test or two. I was just wondering if the Smarty Jr would pass a typical test.
Just wonder how the tuner companies can get away with selling them if it is emission tampering.
This is a quote from the State of Maine Web site.
"Tampering with a vehicles emissions control system is prohibited by the Clean Air Act of 1990 (40 CFR Title 2, Part A, Section 203).Emissions controls on vehicles are part of the certified design from the manufacturer to reduce pollution and protect public health.
Tampering could include the removal, bypass, disconnection, damage or in any way rendering ineffective any emissions control device or element of design that has been installed on a vehicle or engine.
What are the implications of motor vehicle tampering?
Civil Penalties
A manufacturer or dealer who removes or renders inoperative any emission control device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine is subject to a civil penalty of up to $25,000. Others can be fined up to $2, 500. Anyone manufacturing, selling or installation of any part or component that serves to bypass, defeat or render inoperative any emission control device or element of design is subject to a civil penalty of up $2,500."
Clearly a 25k fine so I assume it isn't tampering.
Just saying
Assuming anything can be wrong. There are hundreds of thousands of vehicles on the road every day with altered emission systems. Some time do a web search and see how many documented cases of successful prosecution for altering emission systems you find. Me thinks you cry wolf a little too much.
I don't think adding a programmer is "emissions tampering" since you're not actually removing any of the emissions components.
Either way I'm not worried about it, when time comes I need to go for a test I'll just put the settings back to stock. I haven't removed any emissions equipment, still have my cat on etc.
I've been running the Bully Dog for 4 years and it's never given me any grief, I love it. Running at stock settings is painfull. I've since added a Quadzilla X2 and use it only for adding rail pressure. I go easy on it and only max it out for a dyno run, don't want to risk damaging my (stock) injectors.

Oh well, I like to stay within the laws but I'm not giving up the tuner. Sure glad my state don't test. Got to run and remove the mattress tags now

The EPA is out to make criminals out of all of us that just want our vehicles run like the manufacturers intended them to run. The EPA has made diesel engines use more fuel and run with retarded timing that reduces power. How can they convince anyone that burning more fuel is better for the environment. I sure don't buy it. My MP-8 raised my fuel mileage from less than 7 mpg to 8.5 mpg.
This was a hot topic on the Duramax forums for a while. Some of the tuners allowed you to do a DPF delete or EGR block without getting error codes. A couple of the larger suppliers have discontined those products even though they stated for off-road/race use only. Rumor was they were pressured by the EPA into doing so.
Just to note, I see nowhere on the Banks web site where it says for off-road/race use only.... but then they don't stop error codes if you do a DPF delete or EGR block.
I use a programmer, makes the engine feel more responsive, smooths accelleration, for the improvement in power and performance, without sacrificing current mileage it is worth it to me. Sometimes I get better mileage but it is sure hard to keep your foot out of it sometimes. It is nice being able to set the cruise control at 65 and not having to care about the grade, mountains, pass or whatever you are towing in...... I love my diesel. I use PPE Race +2 E.T. programmer, I love it.
