Gentlemen -
We just wrapped up our vacation trip to Florida with only minor maintenance issues. The first being the loss of the cruise control. Steve at King Cruise was very helpful and will be sending us a new box for the cruise control unit. The second problem was having trouble starting our Cummins 8.3 when it was hot. This came to a head at a service station in Arkansas on the way back when the engine would start and immediately shut down again. After explaining to the attendant that we weren't camping at the diesel pump, we figured out that it was indeed, you guessed it - the fuel shut off solenoid. By turning the ignition key on and prying the solenoid open with a screwdriver we were able to get it started. Another option was to wire it open, but it had enough "magnetism" left to stick open once I jammed it upwards with a screwdriver. Anyway, we managed to screwdrive our way back home and now I'm looking for a new fuel shut off solenoid. Is there one particular brand that everybody is crazy about or seems to have good success with? I saw a product advertised from "Larry B's" which claimed to be an improved solenoid. Can anyone offer any advice either way? Thanks in advance.

I carry a spare one (FL70) as this is faily common problem on the 5.9 and 8.3. Sounds like this one lasted 15 years so one more should do you. $ Ebay

This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

First off get a RELAY and try this first BEFORE you buy the solenoid. Larry "B" has this to. Talk to him and get his opinion. The relay will go bad first, and is a lot cheaper to replace at a few bucks versus $160.00 for the solenoid.

On the 5.9 the shut off solenoid has two separate circuits. The initial start circuit and hold circuit.

http://www.fostertruck.com/dodge/ it is right under the picture of the Fuel Solenoid Brackets.

Or you could save a bunch of money and just install a PTO cable to control the fuel shut off, and eliminate the solenoid, and related problems, all together. Should be able to do that for about $50. Many of the old diesels were set up that way. Simple mechanical design.

Tom,
I just went through this on my Dynasty, just replace the solenoid. Its just two bolts, the electrical connection and a pin on the fuel shutoff valve. The most important thing to know is if your bolt spacing on the solenoid mount is 2.5" or 3". Mine was 2.5". I managed to locate a NOS (new old stock) solenoid on e-bay but Larry-B can supply what you need, give him a call and talk to him. Cummins wanted $450.00 for a new one.
