Nope. I was in Van Nuys during the 1971 earthquake. It was 7.3. It was actually a 6.8, and there is a H U G E difference between those numbers.. Each major point is x10 magnitude.

Over 40 years that magnitude has changed many times from 6.3 to 7.8.
And yes...magnitude is an exponential - however that applies.

What you are thinking of is Northridge that was bumping up against a 7.0, and the conspiracy mongers were claiming that the numbers were being kept on the low side to keep the Feds from ramping up into a different level of assistance.

I guess if you live back there and have a shaker it's news. come to Califofnia and experance the real thing. I have bouncing trucks go by my home off the freeway that register 3.5 all the time.
The best part is there were no deaths from all those brick buildings that were never retrofitted, a few had the whole wall done on the third story very lucky people in that building.

Actually, since they had to evacuate the U.S. Capital, it was a valid excuse for Congress not getting anything done.

X2 I have lived outside of Philadelphia for 34 years and I can count on one hand the number of quakes during that time and I do not need all the fingers. Never known of any quake damage within 500 miles of my home. Hurricanes, now that's another story. Have been known to get several inches of rain over 2 or 3 days and maybe some minor wind damage. Nevertheless, I really like living outside of Philly; not sure I can say that about all the east coast. To each his own.

skipnchar wrote: Yeah that's why I don't like traveling to the East Coast Reports seem to be telling us not much damage and I HOPE they're correct. Daughter just started her new job during graduate school, at Johns Hopkins a couple of days ago. If/ when the New Madrid lets loose again you mid-west guys are gonna have a really big surprise. It's said that it can produce more energy than most of the west coast faults. Even WE wouldn't do well with that thing, and we're usually more ready than most.

Not sure the west coast is the place to be either... LOL In the spring of 2008, Reno experienced the Mogul-Somersett swarm of quakes - literally hundreds of earthquakes in a period of several months, the largest of which was 4.7 and did a good bit of damage to homes in the area. It was very odd to hear and feel the ripples under your feet through the concrete floors.
