Is the west coast looking any better?

Nope. I was in Van Nuys during the 1971 earthquake. It was
7.3.

But that was 40 years ago!

I lived in Ca. for almost 10 years back in the 70's and this was the first Earthquake I have experienced. I was standing in our kitchen when the house started moving, curtains moving and windows moving and had no idea what is was. The movement probably lasted less than 5 sec, but it was an experience and I originally thought it might have been a sonic boom, but never heard anything so that wasn't the source.

Not sure the west coast is the place to be either... LOL In the spring of 2008, Reno experienced the Mogul-Somersett swarm of quakes - literally hundreds of earthquakes in a period of several months, the largest of which was 4.7 and did a good bit of damage to homes in the area. It was very odd to hear and feel the ripples under your feet through the concrete floors.

But then, Reno isn't exactly considered part of "the west coast". California, yes - Nevada, no, except maybe Area 51 (not sure about that).
That's because Reno is sitting on. or near a very large, active geothermal system. That whole area is laced with "dormant" volcanos. Several years ago during a EQ swarm around Mammoth the USGS issued a Volcano warning... Of all things.

Has anyone ever wondered what all those fist-sized rocks are that scatter the landscape out in Quartszite?

From all reports so far, the Mineral, VA quake only caused some relatively minor structural damage to a small number of buildings. Most of the damage appears to be in the form of cracked brick walls and chimneys, with just a few partial chimney collapses. And NO injuries!

On edit: Now I'm seeing reports of some minor injuries and at least one house collapse and other more significant structural damage.

I too am just outside Philly and it was very interesting... Not bad at all just a bit confusing , out in my shop all the steel pans and racks were rattling like a huge train was running next to the building. I am sure all the western gang are telling us to MAN UP,,, it was ONLY 5.8 ....
