BobnDot , Thanks for the RT109 suggestion, but its to far from me, at least 1/2 hour. I have 3 spots in mind all less than 2 miles away. Hugging a building isnt an option. I picked them for lack of trees and possible flying debres with chain link fences to block blowing stuff. Looking like I'll make the move in early evening.

I'm from PA originally. Lived in Norfolk, VA for 8 years and Pensacola, FL for a year. Been through a few hurricanes. Some I stayed, others I left. Flooding is the big issue, IMO. Maybe some debris and falling trees. I'll tell you when things get to the point where you're in fear of your life, it's too late to leave. Best to go when things are still good AND when you won't be sitting in a 50 mile long line of traffic.

"Warning.....hurricane. Leave now"
"HA I'll be alright"
"Hey buddy, winds are picking up and waters rising hop in my 4X4"
"That's OK...go on"
"Got room in my boat, jump in"
"Nah, go on without me, I'll be OK"
"Grab hold of ladder, we'll pull you up into the helicopter"
"I'll be alright!"

Man standing at Pearly Gates with questions....
"Why did you forsake me?"

"GOOD GRIEF.....
I gave you a warning, sent you a 4X4, a boat and a helicopter.
Just WHAT does it take to get your attention?"

I live in FL. If they tell me to leave, I leave! Remember what happened in New Orleans and Mississippi?? Wind is not the problem. Storm surge and flooding and downed trees is the problem. Already people dead in NC. Don't be stupid. Please be safe.

I am only repeating here what was said by a researcher on a program regarding a possible hurricane landfall and the attitude of the population of NYC.

"You can tell a New Yorker, but you can't tell him much!"

Better to get the hell out of Dodge and feel foolish, than to stay and feel dead.

The center of Irene is about ~~ 20 miles off Virginia Beach (it is again out to sea), and heading in the direction of ~~~Queens, NY (this of course can change dramatically over the next few hours, and over greater distances from current position). Now the strong rain field is over New York City (and a very broad area surrounding said)...

We're just now starting to get the northwest quadrant of Irene's rain bands (the heaviest rainfall quadrant). May loose power for a day or two, but we're prepared
