We bought a 2003 Pace Arrow about a year ago. We just recently turned on and used the refrigerator. I put a therometer in it to make sure that it is reaching the correct temperature. We made sure that the RV was level because I understand that affects the refrigerator. Since we are new to RVing, I am wondering about the following problems. When the refrigerator is closed for several hours it reaches the correct temperature. The minute I open the door of course the temperature drops but it takes many hours before it reaches the correct temperature again. Is this normal? I am afraid to put food in there is it is going to take 5 or 6 hrs to get back to the correct temperature. Would putting in a small refrigerator fan help to get it back to the correct temperature quicker? There was nothing in the refrigerator at the time so over packing would not be a factor. Thanks

If it is reaching the "correct temperature," then it is working and working normally.

All refrigerators (RV or home type) dump a lot of their temp when you open the door. The warmer the ambient temp is the more this becomes a factor. All refrigerators take time to recover this dumped cold air.
A frig fan supposedly helps some.

Sounds typical of an empty refrigerator.

Once the reefer is filled with cold food, it will recover quickly.
1. There will be a much smaller volume of newly-admitted air to cool, and
2. all that cold food acts as a large thermal mass, rapidly sucking the heat out of the warm air.

A full frig will hold temperature better than an empty. I like to pre-cool/freeze items before we hit the road.

I have two of those frig fans for mine and it maintains the 39 deg I like. I like them because a RV frig does not circulate anything because it dont come with a fan, the cold air just sits there, a fan is a must as far as I'm concerned.
All I have to do now is get the DW to close the door asap, she thinks it like the one at home, open the door and look for something while the cold air goes out and on the floor.

The one thing I'll never understand is why so many RV fridges are way worse in quality and cooling strength than a regular home fridge.

4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

Because they are NOT EVEN close to the same animal, a home fridge uses a compresser and freon, a rv fridge uses Ammonia ....and Heat.

Like comparing a Snake, and a elephant............... because "they both eat"
