My broker is EF Hutton, and he says . . . .

(Everyone stops in there tracks to listen)

. . . NOPE, not detonation!

Just a Squariel Mark II heading for Sturgis.

Hawkins, I understand how your engine might run better, but just how is it free HP? Octane cost money where I live. What planet are you from?

I been around engines my whole life they are not forgiving if not treated right. This looks like a problem I had a few years ago. I had bought a Jeep with a "Rebuilt Engine". Well Everyone has a different definition of "REBUILT". I tore the engine down and found out it meant 5 new pistons old bearings new chain old sprockets and heads that had been cleaned and new valve seals. The cylinders had a very smooth ridge but not hard to get the rings past and almost gone after I honed the walls to seat the new rings I installed. Well I had the block cleaned and the crank checked. I assembled it with new bearings and rings Heads rebuilt and assembled it. Ran well for about 2 years till I was pulling a Jeep up to highway speed on a long ramp. As It hit red line in second gear I lost a cylinder. I found that the top of a piston had popped off over the top ring. The piston expands as combustion temps rise and I figure they were up there. Revving the snot out of it with piston expanded all the way out caused the top ring to bind in the little bit of groove left at the top of the cylinder and pop the edge off the piston and the pieces caused all the dents in the piston. The engine blew both valve cover gaskets and filled the air cleaner. from that point on if I replace rings or especially pistons I have the cylinder bored so there is no ledge at all. Never happened again. lost count of how many engines I have built since then. No 4 cycle engine failures since.

With the hash marks still there, it looks like the OP's engine has been rebuilt.

no it looks like it may have been but all you are seeing is hone marks and they can be made on a cylinder with ridges and out of round. I have also seen chevys with 75,000 miles have those same marks still there. with a mirror finish

Because it will wind out and shift up faster on premium I do not have to have my foot in it as hard on hills so MPG increase keeps fuel cost about the same.

Going out to see the Pacific Ocean and back (hoping for a round trip ) the kids are to keep up with fuel expenese and usage so we should develop some meaningful data on our 1992 454 TBI.

After reading threads like this one I bet more with 454 engines move to higher octane fuel choices especially if they learn they get free power to and may prevent blowing up the engine.

We do try to clean our ring groves prior to each oil change but as far as I know I have never had an engine with sticking rings. I know Sea Foam ran the last 50 miles before an oil change will make relative clean oil turn darker fast but it may just be flushing stuff out of the oil filter.

From the looks of the piston tops this engine has been detonating for a long time.

Glad to hear that you got it going. If you haven't done so since taking it on the test drive after putting it back together, change your oil again.

Entirely possible... I'm just not sure why... it was 'missing' under heavy throttle (attributed to old--probably original--plug wires/cap/rotor)...

I ran a fuel pressure test and came up with 32 psi... which is at the upper limit (26-32)...

Anyone know if the OBD (it's a '94--does it have OBD II?) would record if the knock sensors weren't operating?

At this point, I'm planning on running mid-grade gas and taking it 'easy' on the mountain passes just west of here...

...and keeping my fingers crossed...

This is our first RV -- '94 Warrior - Chevy P chassis - the kids say it has a "7.4 liter" engine... You and I both know it's a "454"... ask me about our toad!

Thanks to all who chimed in here...

Finally got the BaB together and took it for a test run...

...not wanting to jinx myself... but... it's actually smoother now than it had since we bought it! (April '11)

Still, I'm gonna keep (relatively) close to home for awhile and make sure the cell phone is charged when we get back on the open road...

Not sure if I coulda done it without the help from this forum... (I've posted several threads regarding issues that were just enough different from a 'normal' vehicle so as to be confusing while working on a motor home...)

P.S. I've located the 'timing wire' which needs to be disconnected before setting the timing... what a PITA that was...

Thanks again to all who contributed...
