Some of the newer home water heaters are power vented, so those do need 120 volt power to heat the fresh water coming in but you should be able to get a couple of showers from the heated water thats already in the tank.

Well rob-at-the-lake it's sometimes pays to spend a bit more over the years with the 120v well pump, instead of the more economical 240v pump, but be able to run it from your generator when the power is out....

240v generators are easy to find and I doubt the cost per watt is any more than 120v.

If it has a pilot light all will continue to work without any electricity.

It takes 4Kw to 8Kw to kick a water well on, depending on depth and design. I know this is off-topic to the OPs question but saw this as an opportunity to show off my home cobbled 15Kw diesel sipping power plant. It will run my and the nieghbors whole house without a problem.
