Thanks for any help on this subject. We are new to owning a fifth wheeel and have a question on staying in our rig during some winter months. Due to unforseen circumstances we will be staying in Kentucy till January. It is not a four season rig. What precautions should I take so we can still be comfortable in the rig and not have to worry about systems freezing. Thanks again.

When it is really cold let your faucets drip to keep water from freezing in the lines. Plastic inside over windows might help.Light bulb near tanks to keep them from freezing. Straw or skirt around bottom of trailer to stop wind. Good luck.

Just a warning! Straw is a dangerous fire hazard! We had an old house and put straw bales around the foundation as it was very drafty - the straw caught fire by the porch and we almost lost the house - we did lose the porch, and only saved the house by pushing the porch off with a backhoe that was close! We took away the rest of the bales that same day! So be careful how you use bales! They are a great insulator, but I won't use them again.

Keep several jugs of water inside, just in-case.
Get, or rent, a big(ger) propane tank.
Buy a couple electric space heaters.
Invest in some warm clothing.

Wrap (insulate) the supply water hose.
Open cabinet doors where water lines run.
We have the stick-on-the-outside electric tank heaters; don't look like they would do much, but are easy to install and the tanks have not frozen.
Reflectix sheets cut to the size of the windows likely would help, and are stiff enough that on most windows they will stay in place without fastening if put between the glass and lowered shade.
x2 an electric space heater; in 28 degree weather, one electric portable cut our propane use from 30# in 3 days to less than 30# a week.

I recieved a book as a gift, written by a couple in Northern Ontario who four season camp. They have used a variety of units that were not 4 season units and have learned what works from experience. This link goes to their site where they sell their books in paperback or CD versions. I enjoyed reading the one I have.

Try to insulate the incoming water supply as much as possible and if necessary wrap the connections with wash cloths or hand towels.
Cover the exposed hose with an old quilt or blanket.
If you have an outside water filter cover it up with something.

Be sure to check out any ceramic or electrical heaters for power or current draw. You can get overloaded in a heartbeat and pop circuit breakers.

If the belly of your unit is covered, you can probably get by with the temps down to 15*F, as long as the wind doesn't get up and stay up.

Depending on the size of your unit, you'll can figure on about one to one and a half 30# tanks of propane a week. That is unless you're extremely cold natured. The propane supply company may rent you a 100 gal tank for little or nothing. It sure eliminates a lot of hassle.
