Help! We are newbies. We are in 30' Motor Home travelling down CA-1. We will be leaving Birmingham Trailer Village/RV Park in Van Nuys on Saturday a.m., September 10. (definitely recommend it for anyone visiting LA area -- close to everything, and relaxing, friendly and reasonable park.)
We are going toward San Diego area and want to boondock or at least get by as inexpensively and safely as we can; and see some beautiful areas along the way.
I thought we may spend the day at Santa Monica Pier before heading somewhere to spend the night.
? Need to find stops along way as would like to only travel about 50 miles a day.
I saw an Orange County campground - Ortega Flats
I also saw there is a Rest Area called Alison Creek (about 6 miles North of Oceanside on 005)
PLEASE -- any insight/suggestions sure would be helpful. (being newbies we knocked our a.c. out at a gas station)
We will need to get back to Vegas no later than September 19 to drop me off at work.

You are kidding aren't you? Cheap or free in California. Went to San Diego once and spent one night on the bay. That was probably 20 years ago and I have not recovered from the price shock yet.

I suggest you do a quick google search on Casinos. Thats the only cheap places in Calif if you dont leave the parking lots.

The rest area would be a no-no. No casinos in that area. So basically your options are state/county campgrounds, though the state campgrounds have become about as costly as commercial campgrounds.
If you were traveling during the middle of the week you may be able to get into one of the beach campgrounds, but you aren't so you may have problems.

The state campgrounds are $35/night dry camping. Check Reserve America
Orange County parks that offer camping Campgrounds. Fees look like they are $20. Never camped there so no advice.
San Diego County Campgrounds Website. They are spread out throughout the county and are $24/night water and electric. We enjoyed Guajome close to Legoland for us.
Hope this helps, but not a whole lot of boondocking that I know of in this area. If you are a veteran some of the bases in San Diego also have campgrounds, but don't know the availability.

Thank you ALL for your great input.
My husband has now changed his mind and we won't be going down to San Diego and then back toward Vegas (taking San Diego trip out of equation).
We are instead wanting to still do Long Beach area though before heading back -- may swing down toward Temecula Casino -- we will be headed toward Laughlin before entering Vegas.
I am going to search BLM, National Park, National Forest... sure don't want desert though for a stay-over!

If you want to get away from the heat, Big Bear or Arrowhead is your best bet.
Barton Flats area off Hwy 38 is pretty good for camping, and campgrounds are NF.

Go to the harbor in Oceanside, just off I-5. It is not free, except for gimp tag, but I think it was $15 about 3 years ago.
No hookups, but great place to park.
