Has anyone ever work camped at Okefenokee Swamp Park? Just wondering what your experience was and would you recommend it?

Thanks,

I did not even know the Swamp Park had camping much less work-camping and I grew with 5 miles of the Park. Imagine that!

Well actually they do not have a campground open to the public. It is only for the use of volunteers while they are working at the park,,,,,,as I understand it.

They do have a concession to rent boats and such. And IIRC a restaurant.

I think there are at least 2, but more like 3 parks you are talking about here. There is one in Florida, and two in Georgia. One is near Waycross and is more a show place than a campground. There is also Stephen Foster SP that is indeed a CG. We used to go there in February to avoid the bugs. I think there is a couple of host sites there. There is also Laura Walker SP. Though not fully in the park, it is still a great place for a few days in the swamp (and also in the winter) Bugs get BAD in the Okeefenokee.

Is it Okefenokee Swamp Park or Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge? It will be our first time working at the NWR this fall.

It is the Okefenokee Swamp Park which is part of the refuge. It is one of 3 major access points to the swamp.

1. Suwannee Canal Recreation Area (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service)
2. Stephen C. Foster State Park (GA State Parks
3. Okefenokee Swamp Park (private, non-profit)

This will be our first year work camping there. Actually it will be our first year work camping anywhere. We are retiring 12/2/2011 and plan to be working at the swamp by 1/1/2012

Here is a link to their web page.

what kind of duties are you going to have there? I wouldn't think they would be very busy in Jan.. gators are not very visible then.. and that is what most people come to see.. that was what the people I have carried there wanted to see.. Are you working store, filing float plans & permits for folks, leading tours, working in visitor center or doing maint work?

We plan to stay thru April doing building and grounds maintenance, projects that can't be done during the busy season. Boat and train tours, office work and greet visitors and anything else they need done. Jobs and hours are flexible.

To be honest, it really doesn't matter to me as long as it does not include shoveling snow.

This is from the posting:

.... seeking individual or couples to help with facilities & grounds maintenance, visitor contact and more. Paved RV sites w/FHU plus laundry. ......
