our Ford Ambulance did the same thing after we had the tranny rebuilt ran fine for a bit then started shifting funny: drive, neutral, 3rd, neutral drive etc. Dealer found a short in the harness from the tranny to the PCM, it got nicked while putting in the new tranny. They replaced it and no issues for the past two weeks and 4000 miles (yes we beat the heck out of them)

Thanks Buzzcut - I'll pass that info along.

spacedoutbob - I'm not sure what the transmission is. It's a 2000 F350 7.3 PSD 4x4. So we'll have to double check that. Thanks for the heads up.

mooring product - not only would our truck have burned up ... but our CAMPER along with it!! I guess the perspective is that things could always be worse ... And we were also thankful that it didn't go out - COMING DOWN HWY 120!!!

SoCal - I'm glad you commented. In retrospect, we're pretty sure that the transmission was beginning to go out while we coming from Manzanita Lake thru Lassen NP, and all the way down Hwy 49 to Yosemite Valley. My husband had checked the transmission fluid before we left home, but when he checked it again at Upper Pines - it was low. So when we took the Harley up over Tioga Pass, we stopped in Lee Vining and bought two more quarts. (One to bring it up to Full and one spare.)

As it turned out - our truck had only a small pan rather than a LARGE pan. So instead of having some opportunity to cool off while circulating - the transmission fluid just continued to run HOT. Now I don't know whether the larger/deeper pans were available back in 1999/2000 for the Fords ... or if "coming from the land of perpetual rain, where a 90 degree day is one for the record books" - they didn't even THINK of "offering a bigger pan". At any rate - it's unfortunate that when we had the tranny serviced a few years back - that they didn't at least mention the option then!! We definitely would have gone for the upgrade.

$370 now - but well worth it.

sleepy -

could it be that TC people are just naturally hardier

perchance our ancestors were TRAIL BLAZING pioneers ...

bobndot -

After chatting with quite a few Rangers at various National Parks & Monuments - I get the impression that many are actually "migratory birds" ... following the jobs with the changing seasons and according to seniority. Perhaps some gain enough senior staus to stay at one park for most of their career - but quite a few seem to be pretty "transient" (at least the ones we've talked to at the Federal Parks we've visited?)

However, the two up at the CG Station, were we inquired about whether it would be alright to leave our trailer until we could get back to pick it up, were very sympathetic to our plight and readily gave us permission (as long as it was well off the road).

In this case, the AAA DRIVER (STEVE with the Sonora AAA tow service) AND the DISPATCHER were the life-savers in not only calling around to find us a room for a Friday nt - but then the driver actually made a point of STOPPING at the hotel so that we could "unload" as much stuff as we needed. He even expertly backed the towed TC right around the corner & up a hill to the back of the hotel and positioned it right in front of our door!! WOW (and this as a storm was quickly moving in.) Anyway thank heavens we didn't have to deal with ANY of those extra headaches.

I know what it's like to suffer tranny failures far from home. Glad you got it fixed quickly......that being said...

I hate to see folks spend 3-4k on these reman trannys. Get one built by BTS or John Woods, or Steve Troyan at TPS.

Best transmissions out there for the 7.3l trucks.

Doesn't matter what weight you haul, or how much power you put down, they can build one that can handle it, and they stand behind their products.

2000 F250/350 pickup auto tranny is the 4R100 4 speed OD, which is the successor to the E4OD I have in my '97 F350 7.3 diesel. The E4OD is the worst shifting tranny I have ever owned. It can't make up it's mind which gear it wants to be in and keeps playing with the torque converter lock/unlock constantly. I hate it! I want to replace it with a C6!

btggraphix -

Right now we're actually "camping" in style It seems that we have a condo membership which happens to have a RESORT AT ANGELS CAMP (bought a few years back in a fit of giddyishness which is quite contrary to us!! boy I can see how easy it is to get swept up in such "purchases".) AND we arrived quite stylishly, too - "on the Harley with our matching set of luggage ... four Safeway plastic grocery bags" lol

ANYHOW - as to the utility trailer.

Seems there are would-be-thieves-afoot-in-Yosemite (and I don't mean bears)!!

Yes - someone tried to steal it!! And it was parked right by the Ranger Hut. However of course it is NOT MANNED 24 hrs a day.

So what the attempted thieves did was to try to take off the hitch extension because my husband had padlocked the ball cover (sorry I'm not good with all the lingo). They succeeded in removing two of the nuts from ONE of the tiedowns(?). BUT they couldn't get the nuts off the second one - because it was JAMMED when we "caught the CREST of a service station exit which was incredibly HIGH" And the only way to get them off is to CUT them off (hmmm my dear Aunt always used to say that everything happens for a reason)!

So a heads up that there ARE 2 legged THIEVES working Yosemite. Be sure to keep your rigs, utility trailers, and toys LOCKED.

I suggest installing the deep dish pan for the extra cooling fins on them and the 4 extra qts. of oil. Also the get pan with the trans temp gauge connection for installing a temp gauge.

Not to get off subject here, but don't the deep dish pans cost over $400 plus the labor charges - which can be substantial? Isn't that a bit of overkill for the usages that B. Boomer is up against? Well maybe not since their trans just went kaput. But still..

The fancy finned aluminum deep pans are pretty expensive. The money would be better spent on a bigger, better extra capacity tranny cooler in front of the radiator. Maybe add a thermostatically controlled electric fan in front of the cooler too.

I assumed it already has a trans cooler since most American automatic transmission larger capacity trucks have a good towing capacity.

My Mag HyTech pan cost 257 installed during the regular 30,000 mile trans service the pan gets removed any way to replace the filter.

The biggest advantage is the connection for the temp gauge, cooling fins and larger capacity.

Anyone towing with an auto trans should have a gauge when a new trans costs so much more than 400 bucks.

To add further most trans builders only do factory specs on the rebuild and becomes the weak point on a high capacity truck. One really needs to do research for a good builder for a good strong transmission. Esp. behind a good strong diesel engine like the 7.3.
