...you don't want an older truck with a 7.3
...you don't want a problematic 6.0 or 6.4
...you don't want a V10
...and you can't afford a 6.7
So, really, Ford is out of the running, because you have dismissed just about every engine they've made in the last 20 years. All that's left for you to dismiss are the 300-6, 302, 351, 460, 4.6, 5.4 and 6.2. I'm sure you'll have no problem coming up with a reason to dismiss those too.
Guess Ford isn't really what you want after all. So, best thing you can do is look for a Cummins or a Duramax....
I would buy an 06 Duramax if I couldn't afford new. But 06 was not too bad of year for the powerstroke. If you can aford the 2011 6.7 I'm sure hoh would love it.

My own experience with the 6.0 was not a good one but mine was an 04 model year and was actually built in 03 so it was one of the first ones out. If you buy a 6.0 try to find an 06 model year or get one of the the next generation of power strokes as they have a very good reputation.
Former Triton V10 solid as a rock owner here - depending on the size of fiver, it may not be enough. We just traded our V10 SRW in for a 6.7L DRW and would never go back.

I did not say I did not want an older truck but I doubt I could find a nice low mile example. My class A had a V-10 and it did not have the pulling power I want. Thanks for your input on what I can afford. I have had almost all of the engine combinations you list but again I am looking for a diesel to pull a 5er. The 300-6 was a workhorse but I would not consider it for this application either. Why did you bother posting if all you have to offer are smart a$$ remarks?
Look out for the new leaner and meaner GM !!!! Be a ford man if you want, but that 10 year proven duramax and allison are # 1 in my book!!! Bail out or not!!!
me thinks if you look this is a Ram truck, not a ford.

Now that there is funny, true but funny.
I thought Dodge paid off the bail out money?
Yeah a 6.7 PSD is the only Ford I'd buy, but again I'm to cheap to spend 60k on a new truck.

The common problems that plagued the 6.0L PSD are now well known. If you can find a nice, low mileage '06 or '07 truck that does not have an extensive repair history you could very well make something work with it. If you can buy it right you could:
1) Install Coolant Filter
2) Update oil Cooler
3) Update EGR Cooler
4) Install ARP Head Studs
Those seem to be the primary culprits that led to major problems when they went undetected. If those are addressed you can probably have a very durable, dependable tow rig.
The '08-'10 trucks had the 6.4L had a couple of issues but nothing earth shattering. I believe power output was okay but fuel economy wasn't very good.
If you can find a killer deal on a '11 you would get the 6.7L. So far, I haven't heard of ANY common problems on those engines. Ford seems to have really buttoned things up when they designed this one.
If you're concerned about the Ford quirks, then you probably need to consider Dodge or GM. The '07 6.6L Duramax seems to be the most sought after. It is the highest output engine GM had without the DPF. An '07 Dodge would be in the same category.
