I have an 87 Allegro and love the MH. The one you are looking at does look good. I also would be leary of buying something through an auction without driving or testing the systems. With a non-working generator the price bid is about right for that model and year. Don't go any higher. Way too much inventory out there and in the next couple of months the inventory will get higher. Keep looking. We spent far less on our rig knowing that we were going to put about $2500 to $3000 into it. We are currently at $1800 with 3 or 4 items to go. I would walk away and go local.

Would you buy a 21-year-old car? (Part 2): Would you buy a 21-year-old car with a house strapped to the back of it?
Plus, 38,000 miles equates to only about 1800 miles per year --- that means it's been sitting idle A LOT. I know what happens to cars when they sit idle.
It looks nice in the pics, but IMO it's strictly a roll of the dice.

My DW and I live fulltime in a 1988 Gulfstream HiRise 32' and are love it. So much depends on several factors: Are you using it for weekend/Vacations or fulltime, what can you afford?, Can you fix most problems or will a shop do the work? and What are your expectations?.. I was forced into an early retirement, 10 years early to be exact. We had planned to retire to the rv lifestyle already and both had spent time rving in our past so we knew what to expect. Our finances had just gone from good to bad so we bought what we could afford. lastly I'v been a mechanic and fabricator my whole life and can fix most things myself. So buying an older motorhome has worked out very well for us. So far we've been able to take care of any problems while traveling coast to coast and living the snowbird lifestyle.

Once you are considering a used unit 10 or more years old, then I don't think the exact year is very important so whether it's a 1990, 93 or even late 90's wouldn't be the issue. It would be all about how much work($$$) it will need to get it in shape for the road and how much you are going to pay to buy it. I think, on any older unit, one needs to get a very very good deal; that is, cheap. That's so you can feel free to spend how ever many thousand it will take to get it in shape. Also, you need to have an expert RV person inspect it so you will know what it will take. If you could buy it for $3000 and spend another $6,000 fixing it up that would be a pretty low priced RV. Appearance would also be important as it would be difficult to make a really junky one look nice.

Very true, High end parks have a ten year old rule and many other parks have a 20 year old rule. Of the parks that have a 20 yr rule many have a "pride of ownership" exemption. Meaning If your rig looks nice and they can see that you take care of it they will wave the age rule.

I own a 1990 Roadtrek 190P. I love it. It is dated, by the "mauve" interior LOL. Has had the transmission replaced. The only leaks have been from the "3 top windows" (trademark of the Roadtrek). Only other things have been minor cosmetic stuff. The outside shows it age, b/c with the raised top, was not garage kept.

Wow!!! A "10-year old" or "20-year old" rule?? I had no idea!!!!
That seems a bit crazy to me, but I get the point. You mentioned high end parks. Could you give an example?
Thanks!
Thanks All!

The high end parks they are refering to tend to be RV resort or membership style campgrounds. You would have to read the CG rules to know which ones it applies to. I know a membership CG in our area that allows them. I have only been to a few CG's in our area but have seen older models at all of them (ie jordan lake, zooland, etc)

our rig is a 1990 that was built in 7-89, it has had some water leaks and I have taken care of them. No permanent damage. We are in the beginning of a long trip, about two months from Los Angeles up into Canada and down the East coast at least to the Carolinas and then home . haven't decided that route yet.
Our 10 yo grandson says that the MoHo has some issues, like the plastic molding and other parts are subject to sun rot and there aren't many places where you can find new ones. Other than that it looks pretty good and it has an aluminum roof so no damage there. Not all 1990 rigs had rubber roofs. Like you already know, you should only buy on the condition that it pass inspection. Good luck and take your time, you'll find a good one at your price.

ponytail mom - From the way you have written your post I think you should get a newer motor home. Sometimes it takes a huge amount of effort to get things fixed and running right. On my last two motor homes I had this experience. 1. The seller on this one left extensive notes on all the work he did. Most of it was done half baked. Took me about two years to get the generator working right on that one. 2. The newest one. The previous owner lied through his teeth. Took over a year to get generator working well on that one.
I am fairly mechanically inclined. Normally late year class Cs are fairly bulletproof. Old ones not.
