We love DR, but we have never gone without a reservation as we usually can only go on weekends. It seems to be getting more difficult to get a reservation there unless you book way out. I was noticing that most of the sites are not reservable (only 41 out 160). I was curious as to what the odds are for getting a site in the middle of the week without a reservation? Thanks in advance.

I have only been there in the fall but have never had a problem getting a site. It is one of my very favorite campgrounds. Especially nice when I have been able to get a site with electric.

I've stayed there several times in the last five or six years and never had any difficulty getting in. Last time was in May of 2010 and that was on a Friday afternoon when we pulled in. Not positive but I THINK they did fill up later in the evening though.
Have to tell you that finding a place that HAS a fair amount of NR sites is a welcome relief to one who travels

For the middle of the week, you should be fine. Every time we have went up in the middle of the week we have always been able to get something. If you don't get an electric site, you can ask them to put you on their list for one. That way when someone moves from an electric site, they will go down their list and let you know. However, if they come to your site and you are not there, you get skipped.

We were there the last of August for 5 days (with reservations) from Sunday through Friday morning and there were several empty sites. The Host told us the two sites in the Sycamore loop that can be reserved will be taken off the reservable list next year. I don't know about the reservable sites in the other loops. They said the reason was that the sites set empty too much when they are reserved because the reserved dates may overlap dates that someone that drives up wants them for.
Davidson River is also one of our favorite CGs. Large shady sites, good roads, plenty of places to walk and ride bicycles and if you have a good camp saw there is free firewood on the ground that you can cut.
