Apparently rust is an excellent lubricant. Most of the hitch balls I see are rusted completely. It's cheap and doesn't stain like grease does.
My ball is all shiny and new. I have looked everywhere and can't find it anywhere. Where the heck do you buy this wonderful product...

That is true that hitch balls do not *require* lube, but it does help keep them from galling, pitting, and reduces wear. I towed my brand new trailer home from the dealer with a brand new hitch ball for a total of about 45 miles with no lube on the ball. When I unhitched the ball was a galled up mess. I always lube it now.

People don't "require" food and water either! All hitch manufacturers recommend using grease on the ball and the WD bars where they go into the hitch head. The ball will certainly function for a time without any lube, just like a person can function for a while without food and water, BUT after a while bad things start to happen.

Have a friend who didn't lube TT ball ... until the day ball galled, stuck to coupler, and he found it had loosened the nut while driving. He is now a firm believer on lubing the ball. Your choice.
I use Reese ball lube or wheel bearing grease, depending on what I can find easily.

Any lube will work, including wax paper. How can a person be so anal or a lube for a hitch ball?
