I'm thinking that when I go down south this winter I may look around for a Class A if I find one I like. I went to my bank to ask them if I could set up a way of getting money to pay for one if I buy. I thought I could set up a draft and then when I need the money get it sent down.
I did this a few years ago. They said thing have changed and you have to be home to do the draft; and that would not work. So is there another way to do this so that I can get to what ever amount of money I may need to send down. The bank I am dealing with is the Royal Bank; maybe its time to shop for another bank.
How have you bought something in the USA and how did you do it?

P.S. They said I had to be in my bank in Canada to do a wire transfer; I can not do it over the phone from the USA.

Not being from Canada I'm not sure what a draft is.. I would suggest a wire transfer (unless that's the same thing)

I assume you are speaking of the Royal Bank of Canada. If so, I know of several RBC locations here in North Carolina. I have actually been in their huge board room in Toronto once when I was working for the NC Dept of Commerce. I don't know if they are in other states in the US. I would question them as to this possibility and if the answer is still no, look at other arrangements. Good luck!!

I have wire transferred money to my American account many times. But I have always set it up while at home. If you set up an account in an American bank it is easy tp transfer funds back and forth. I have also wired funds to an American branch of RBC with no problems. It just takes more time to clear to an American bank than a Canadian bank would....

Use plastic. A cash or credit card will do the trick and just think of all the miles you could accumulate!

LOL several years ago I started acquiring rvs in the valley and found that my bank didnt really like wiring , transferrring , etc money.

So every year now, I go to Wells Fargo, reopen my account and that allows me to do what I want , when I want and how I want.

I suggest you find a like bank where you are going and open an account. Then you can transfer all the monies you want.

We bought a new 5th wheel in March while on vacation in Arizona. We had set up a RBC Access USA account before we went on vacation. This gives you a US bank account with a check card (debit card) and you can get a US visa credit card(avoids foreign transaction fees).
I called the US RBC staff and they transferred the money from our Canadian RBC account to our US RBC account and then they did the wire transfer to pay for the new trailer. It took about 20 minutes on the phone to do all the transfers. They faxed documents to the RV park for me to sign and I had to fax them back along with a photo copy of my passport to prove ID. The whole process was very simple.
The information you were given in your Canadian RBC branch was right - due to new security laws regarding money laundering you can only do an international wire transfer if you are in the country where the money originates from. The way we did it, it was considered a domestic wire transfer.

you could also open a US bank account(we did this at Bank of America) then just write yourself a check fro home bank and make a deposit. Another way we do it, we have an ING acct linked to our checking acct. When I need a large amt. of money, I call ING and they transfer it to the home bank-no fee. Its usually in the home bank within 2 business days.
As Tripalot said, lots of companies have a limit on the amt. you can charge, I also was going to rack up my airline rewards buying a new Dodge truck, but the dealer said only 2000.00 could be charged.

The Banking system isn't making things any easier for sure.
The last deal We did involved carrying a Bank draft from Our bank in Canada to the Sellers Bank in California. Then Waiting a week for it to clear.
Next Time I will set up Bank account in the States and just transfer the Money into My own account before going shopping. This may involve several transactions to get enough money in place .

I thought I would do that when we bought our last RV. No way - dealership had a maximum amount that could be charged on new purchases. I think it was $2500 - I was hoping to get a huge amount of airmiles/points! Of course I did charge the maximum allowed. Also, keep in mind that most credit cards have a "limit" and some cards charge a fee if you go over your approved limit.
