I bought a new Winnebago in October of 1987. It was a 1988 model built on a 1986-built chassis in the middle of 1987. Makes no difference, it was still a 1988 model.

I understand that 2012 cars can be sold in 2011. When they are registered it is done as a 2012 not 2011 based on the model year. As of right now mine was registered by the dealer as a 2010 with the secretary of state. This was based on the vin number on the chassis. Is this just a state registration issue?

Not necessarily true. I purchased my 2007 model Rockwood in April of 2006. Right now you can purchase a 2012 GMC truck. It may be misleading but certainly not illegal. The model year is whatever the manufacturer puts on it. when you stop and think about it, it makes no difference what so ever. You still have the identical RV you had before you knew when it was made. It still is whatever it says on the title.

That's the RV model year cycle.

If Forest River says the 2011 Coachmen model year started with units manufactured in January 2010, that's when it started. Quite a few RV manufacturers will start manufacture that early, with the idea of building stock for the early RV shows (Dealer only show in Louisville, RV Supershow in Tampa), and delivery to most dealers starting March or April.

Your unit is not "advertised" as a 2011; if the sales documentation says it is a 2011, it is a 2011. Convincing vehicle registration officials is left as an exercise for the retail customer.

Most of what is currently on your dealer's lot should be 2012 models; Forest River has been manufacturing those since early 2011.

One driving factor that determines the "year" is the tenth character in the VIN. A=2010, B=2011, C=2012, other years found in online search.

The chassis will have one VIN (bottom of windshield on driver's side) and the completed coach could have another (usually on the b-pillar/door jamb on the driver's side).

I would think all legal paperwork for the coach would follow the "coach" VIN.

"When I initially located the unit it was advertised as a 2011. I ended up purchasing the unit and all of the paperwork documented the unit was a 2011 as well."

It was advertised as a "2011" model. All the paperwork documents that it is, in fact, a "2011" model. If the "Certificate Of Origin" states it is a "2011" model, when the title is issued, it will be titled and registered as a "2011" model.
I don't see any problem.

Here is where it depends on what state you live in. I just bought what is considered a 2010 LTV, but the Chevy platform is a 2008. If I lived in Minnesota (for example), it would be registered as a 2010. But, I live in ND, and they will only register it as a 2008... the year of the platform.

To complicate matters, it came off the line in July, 2011. So, in reality, it is a 2011. But, RVIA will supposedly only allow a 2 year difference in year between the platform and the "conversion." Not to mention that this was one of the last 2011s produced and the next rig in line will be called a 2012.

There will be quiz on this one tomorrow... one guess what any future purchaser will consider the year to be.

I just wanted to thank everyone who took the time to respond to this topic. At this point I believe this may be a State registration issue. If the vehicle was sold by the dealer as a 2011 it should be registered as a 2011 not a 2010 which is what it is now.
