From everything I've read, the Tundra doesn't really have enough payload capacity to haul a 5'er.

What combo? I know you have a 1/2 ton Tundra and a 5er, but what 5er? If it's a really lightweight 5er, it "might possibly" work. Don't know the GVW of the 5er your wanting to tow. I wouldn't go by "dry" or "unloaded" weight....that's a joke, no one tows, "dry" or "unloaded". Take the GVW of the 5er, take about 20% of that and that will tell you approx. how much weight your going to put into the bed of your truck, along with the 5er hitch, fuel, and your cargo...family, pets, etc.....Basically, it's all about doing the math...the GVWR and RAWR for your truck should be listed on drivers door jamb or in the owners manual..

Tundra will tow a 5th wheel just fine as long as it has a PIN weight around 800 to 1,000 lb. It would tow a 5er that small as well as any other half ton would because they have plenty of power.

There was a recent post (search for TUNDRA in the search box below) that said he had 1380 pounds available. Subtract 200-300 pounds for a 5th wheel hitch and then subtract anything else in the truck and that will be how much you have available for pin weight. He started with a 7800 pound GVWR IIRC.

I've towed a 28 foot fifth wheel(Prowler 27 5A) since 2002. The camper loaded up is real close to 7000lbs. The Tundra does well and is an excellent dailey driver. I have had no problems thus far and while towing I usually get 7-9 mpg depending on my speed.

Thanks Fresno... it's the daily driver part I'm going after when I bring up the Tundra. I currently have neither half, but am planning on swapping out from the Class A Ford group into a small 5'ver/truck combo which would meet our current needs.
Thanks to the rest, and thanks Skip for putting it in plain english for me.

Check out the forums on tundrasolutions.com site too. They have a section specific to towing with several members on it who tow 5'ers comfortably.

Thanks C-n-F, it never stops amazing me what a person can learn off of the internet when you post a simple question on it. I would have never have guessed there was a group like that out there.

I did tow ours with a Tundra. First gen truck.
But, as above have pointed out, check the capacity of YOUR truck (or the one you are looking to buy). Capacities vary considerably. Mine had a payload of 1860lb. Others that same model year had payloads as low as 1100lb.
You can find light fivers that some 1/2T's can tow. Notice that only SOME 1/2T's can tow them. The only fiver I know of that any 1/2T can tow is the 19ft Scamp.
The lightest of the fivers will have loaded pin weights at or over 1000lb (ours is 1100lb). The hitch on the Tundra weighed about 100lb. The two of us and the dog are 400lb.
If you want a 1/2T then look for one that has as much capacity as you can get.
And just for the record, our fiver has a GVWR of 8400lb and max pin of 1400lb. Those would both put it over the capacities of my Tundra. But, when loaded for travel it weighs in at about 7000lb and pin weight of 1100lb.
So, don't just look at GVWR of the trailer depending on how you plan to use it.
