Not sure what you do while out. We went with drop resistant, water proof camera. It's a panasonic. Takes great pics for a point and shoot. For best quality pics you will want an SLR. Not much of those at your posted price point. However, check out Canon Rebel.

I just ordered a Canon SX30IS. It is a super zoom(35X)14.1 MP, point and shoot camera. It is medium sized and not hard to use, you can go automatic or manual and it has presets for a number of different settings along with video. I have a Canon S2IS and it has done a great job over the last five years. It just lost its sensor and now rendered blind.

Take a look at the Nikon P500 36X optical zoom. No extra lenses needed. If we did not have a fairly new P100 26X, we would own it.

You'll get a variety of answers, so it really comes down to what is important to you. For me, I needed a camera that would take good pics in my kids cafegymatorium during their programs, had a great zoom for those football field shots, and something easy that my husband could use (he has gorilla fingers). I also needed viewfinder - it's easier on his eyes to use a viewfinder, and when its bright out. Point and shoot is best for me, altho I like the option of learning how to use the shutter speed and aperture settings.
The Nikon P100 CoolPix fits the bill and has been a great camera.

I second rrupert's Canon SX30IS choice. I've had mine for about a year now. The zoom with image stabilization is great. I think the zoom works out to something like 800mm. I have some amazing shots from this summers trip to Alaska. I took 2 8gig SD cards and 3 batteries to make sure I was always ready.
750 HD video but poor audio pick up. Great low lite pics on auto setting, a lot of them were better than the flash pics. In Alaska I took a lot of pics with multiple settings just so I could pick and chose at home.

I just bought a Nikon Coolpix S9100. Very easy to use & great pics. Great travel camera to suppliment my other 20LB camera bag. I exhibit & even sometimes sell my photos, but wanted a simple walk around camera. I also have a Canon G12. Another great camera for casual use but with lots of additional features. Then there is the 20LB bag of my serious equipment. Sometimes I like to just keep it simple tho.

I'm a Sony person... Love the HX1...and now they have the newer version. Great video (even in low light) It's got an easy button but it gives so much more choices since you can also choose to control everything (manual) or just shutter, etc etc by switching to P, A, S or M. It looks like a small version of a DSLR but you don't change lenses.
Decide how you want to carry your camera... and whether you are willing to carry a larger camera to get the "best"shots.
Then decide if you want to become a better photographer than you are now. (You'll learn a lot with the HX 1.)
