Has anybody done this, and how well did it work?
I found a Recipe similar to KFC original. My grandmother had another one she came up with that was real close. Since we don't have a pressure cooker and have 4 D.O.s I want to try it. I done a lot of D.O. cooking but never with boiling oil.

Many things have been fried in iron skillets so why not a Dutch Oven? I don't see a problem.

You will be able to "fry" the chicken, but it will not be the same as cooking in a pressure cooker. I am sure it will be good though.

How are you planning on building pressure in a dutch oven and just what are your plans on controlling that pressure???
Messing around with boiling oil under pressure is not something to be done by jury-rigging a dutch oven. Just 5# of pressure can result in death.
I may sound dramatic but 30 yrs. of experience operating/maintaining boilers I have seen the end results from lack of knowledge/dynamics/physics involved.
Please, from a retired boiler operator.....just 'fry' the dang chicken OR go and buy a honest to goodness pressure cooker and then fully understand how to use it.

IMHO, don't try it. I remember heating oil in a pot with a lid on about 55 years ago just after we got married. I can still smell the burning oil and see the poor pet budgie bird trying to fly under the black smoke. He ended up walking on the floor!!! And I ended up washing walls for a month.

Yeah, have to agree. You can't use it as a "pressure cooker". Those have lids that lock down to allow the pressure to build. DO lid will lift...be careful, as previous posters have advised. Or get the right equipment for the job.

You can use a DO as a fryer, but you can't make it a pressure cooker. A pressure cooker has an air tight seal that raises the pressure inside the cooking area that mimics cooking in outerspace.

If your DO has a well fitting lid, there will be some pressure build up. Not enough to be dangerous, but enough to shorten cooking time.

No, not the same type of cooking at all.
Dutch ovens are for slow cooking for more interesting texture and enriched flavours.
Pressure cookers are for either faster cooking because of the pressure or for increased shelf life through more than ground level air pressure - ie. low acid foods in 'canning' containers.
Or the two processes are opposites.

If you use your dutch oven to fry, and try to use the cover, be careful removing the lid. Steam and/or hot oil can escape as you lift the cover, causing you to get a nasty burn.
I fry donuts, etc all the time in a DO, learned the hard way not to put the cover on.
Take care.
