Our situation may be somewhat different from many others since we will be taking our vehicle into Mexico in November on an FMM. We will get our paperwork done and pay the required deposit. Then we fly home for Christmas and return in January. When flying out of Mazatlan, we hand in the FMM and are issued new ones by the airline when we return. I am wondering if anyones knows if there have been problems with getting the deposit refunded when leaving the country and using a different FMM from the one originally given in November. In the past this has never been a problem.
Thanks for any information.

I have the same problem and will be waiting for an answer. I plan on taking copies of the original FMM we receive on crossing and keep the copies of bording passes from the airlines. I hope this will solve the problem, could be interesting though.

While I don't know the answer, and don't have the problem as we aren't flying out in the middle of our stay, I did my TIP online and received my hologram 3 days later by DSL. I don't have an FMM yet, but will pick it up in Sonoyta on the 27th of Oct. so I assume that my TIP is tied to my passport not my FMM.????
assume = a$$, u, me.

This is a tricky one. I doubt they thought about this when these regs were written. Technically your car papers are only valid if your FMM is valid. Have you tried writing to the email address I provided about 2 months ago? They usually respond in a week or less. Use simple English and I am sure you will have an answer. There was a phone # but I could not get it to work.

What they want is a vehicle with a permit leaving Mexico. On my two trips they didn't care about my visa .... just the sticker and the related documents with a time stamp. Sounds easy to me

Have been doing the same for the last 5 years, driving down with numerous flights north.... Only DW has managed to retire :-) Never gave it a thought until the new rules this year. It does seem that the TIP is linked to the passport with the ability to get it online without a FMM. Time will tell and most likely morph as with all things to do with government regs.

I was always under the impression that with the FMM you couldn't leave a vehicle behind without leaving it at one of 22 aduana offices located around the country while gone.

I guess the rules have changed.

My wife has to fly home each year. She is on long term disability and cannot be out of the country for more than 90 consecutive days. She turns in her tourist visa when she leaves and is issued another on the plane on the way back. We turn in both when we drive out and have not had a problem. They don't even look at them. I do make a copy of the original before she leaves just in case and she makes sure they stamp her passport each time. I suspect they don't x-reference the TIP & visa.

With the new rules however, who knows. Maybe I should make sure the truck is in my name only. Be sure to let us know what happens.

I doubt a consulate will be much use. I will write up an inquiry in Spanish & try to get it to the correct department in Mexico to clear this all up. I will ask if the vehicle deposit applies to ATV's & small scooters.

How is this? Anything I need to add?

There seems to be a lot of concern and confusion over the new vehicle importation rules. On a discussion forum on wintering in Mexico, we are receiving a lot of questions. I am hoping you can answer them or forward this to someone who can. Many take Recreational vehicles into Mexico for the winter & fly home again over Christmas or for short term business, leaving their vehicle in an RV park. In previous years they have simply surrendered their FMM at the airport and received a new one upon re-entry. There has not previously been an issue when they later exit Mexico, by land, with their vehicle. There are rumours that under the new changes, the FMM or a passport number is tied to the TIP vehicle permit. This is causing concerns that the TIP may get cancelled when they fly home, and cause problems when they try to exit a couple of months later overland with their vehicle. Can you tell me if it will be an issue and what should they do to prevent problems?

The other question is concerning the new vehicle deposit. I realize this would apply to a motorhome and any tow vehicle. Can you tell me if it applies to any of the following?

1) A cargo trailer towed behind a motorhome
2) An All Terrain vehicle (ATV – 4 wheeled beach type vehicle)
3) A small motor scooter (Eg 50 CC)

Please try to address these issues. I am doing my best to try & help promote tourism to your wonderful country, and offset the paranoia & bad publicity.

Sparksmex, we have been asked to turn in our visa for the past few years. They always stamp our passport with an exit date.
