I recommendthe 5.0l F150 over the Tundra 5.7l, but don't recommend the Ecoboost until Ford finds a solution to the overheating problems.

You must spend a lot of time reading through the f150 forums. There have been a handful of people talking about this and I don't believe any of them have been able to recreate the scenario with a data recorder attached.

Like most owners, our EB has towed wonderfully with little to no complaints.

+1
The biggest problem, per the F150 forums, is the transmission pump problem. My F150 EcoBoost has neither problem. I test drove both of em and the towing capability of the F150 sold me. And I've got a 4runner with 210k miles on it, so I gave the Tundra a chance to impress me. And I've never owned a Ford anything! The Tundra just didn't feel as solid as the F150.
My Ford has 7700lbs GVWR, 1969lbs max payload, 11,300lbs max trailer and I've just got max tow, not the HD.
This is the standard "my truck is better than your truck" thread.
Test drive both of em and don't let this thread influence your decision. Good luck.

I love the Ecoboost. It has everything a big block DOHC V8 engine should have, except the thirst for fuel. This is the only considered motor for me when towing torque is concerned. The 5.0L just doesn't have the low end torque the 5.4L has yet the Ecoboost has gobs more. So it was really disappointing to hear about the problem of over heating.

It's rare but it does happen. It in sunny locations, with 100 degree high temps, where RVers are towing up mountains or large hills with high profile, wide profile, travel trailers that weigh as little as 8000 lbs loaded. This is the only situation where the overheating is happening by all those accounts.

It's simple as this is why Turbo vehicles are not ideal for towing. Very Hot ambient temps with Very Hot Exhaust Gas don't mix well. Heat from the exhaust gas is exchanged to the already Very Hot Ambient Air. With such heat, the intercoolers and the already Largest Max Tow Radiators just can't keep up.

For these extreme situations, which are the norm for many people obviously in the desert areas, the fix is a much larger radiator, specialized coolant, and/or an upgraded intercooler.

For those who don't tow up mountains in desert areas, the overheat problem will likely never be seen. However, overheating and going into limp mode, only has to happen once to ruin the start of a nice vacation.

From 97 to 2011 Ford hasn't made any tremendous advancements in the engine/trans departments except for a gnarly tweaked out V6... Being a large supporter of Ford motor products for the past 20+ years I would say I'm a lil bit bias, that is until I bought a used low mile Tundra which I believe is better all around truck and would choose that...

The change Ford made in '09 from a four speed to a six speed automatic wasn't a major improvement? How about the changes in the tranny from '10 to'11?

OP really opened a can of worms on this one!!!
I have owned Chevy's most of my life and just recently bought the Tundra like I stated earlier. With that said I can't factually comment on the F-150, but it sounds like a pretty good truck.
To each his own, I guess. But I do love my Yota.

You owned a 2011 F150 and traded it for a 2010 Toyota???

The OP is asking for opinions on the 2011 models. It is a moot point to talk about anything less!!!

I am in construction and have (4) 2011 F-150's, therefore I feel I am qualified to give my opinion. Maybe it would be in your best interest to just worry about your own comments and opinions and let other people give theirs.

Sorry DJ... did not mean to sound so cruddy in the previous post. I had just woke up and was without coffee and still a little "cranky". LOL

I come from a Ford family... both grandfathers retired from Ford plants in Ohio. I love Ford trucks!!.... just saying that I prefer my Sequoia (Tundra) for towing the RV. I feel it is a more refined ride.

I owned a 2005 Ford F150 (4x4,5.4L, tow package) that I used to tow a 26' Komfort (approx 7k loaded). The Ford struggled to pull it. I traded up to a 2008 Tundra (4x4, 5.7L, tow package) and the difference was night and day. Same trailer loaded the same, but where I had to floor the Ford to even keep it close to highway speed I have to back off the throttle on the Tundra. The 2008 Tundra was cheaper to buy than 2005 Ford, gets better gas mileage, easier and cheaper to maintain, and tows better. No contest.

The F150 started 'clicking' under the hood and power sharply dropped off. I took it to the dealer who had it for four days, finally confessing to me they could not figure out what was wrong. The service manager told me there were error codes on the module they could not identify, and the factory service specialists could not diagnose the problem either (via an internet hookup). He suggested they start replacing parts one by one (at my expense, of course) until the problem disappeared.

I did not argue or protest. I simply drove my truck away and went to another mechanic I knew, who diagnosed the problem within 1/2 hour -- a slightly burned valve.

Given the cost of repairs, and the F150 was not meeting my needs, it became a trade-in for the Tundra. Never regretted the decision. And I will probably never buy another Ford truck.

There has always been an anti-Toyota rule here on Rv.net... I have a 08 Tundra with around 10,000 towing miles with a little over 6,000 with the trailer in my signature and the rest with a smaller (23ft) lighter (5000 empty) Coleman trailer. Gas mileage averages around 8-10 mpg @ 60-65 MPH regardless of hills or not and a heavier trailer made no change either. I am ocd about checking MPG at every fill up and don't trust the on board computer even though it is always right. I get 16-18 mpg driving around town. I have towed through east coast mountains from PA to TN to NC and lots of flat lands and have been very happy. NO issues stopping even under emergency conditions and have always had plenty of power if I want it.

Please do not believe anyone who starts with "I know a guy..." or "I heard..." go with first had knowledge for both trucks. Also remember they all make bad ones just like with any product sometime quality control lacks on a Friday before a three day weekend.

The reason I bought a Tundra had nothing to do with brand. I'm a Jeep Wrangler guy who always had a small truck but needed a big truck. I was a younger guy in a pair of ratty shorts and a ratty tee shirt who wanted to buy a truck - I was buying a truck that day and at the time it was between the Toyota and Ford. I had done the research and had already drove a tundra. I went to a ford dealership and no one would come help me even though there were many sales people standing around talking. I stood there for almost 20mins and still no help. Made eye contact with multiple sales people but no help. They were too busy talking about the Redhead in the pars department. SO I started kicking/banging on the truck and slamming the doors knocking on the side panels. Not until I started doing this did anyone want to come talk to me. ...At that point when I was asked if they could help me I said not anymore and walked out. I let them know that their choice not to help me helped me choose not to buy a Ford That alone is why I bought a Toyota and I can say I could not be happier.

Since I have owned my Tundra I have put 40000 miles on it and have abused it... Hauled many full loads to the dump and full loads of wood/stone from Lowes and the only issue I have had to address was 2 new windshield wipers this summer. I have placed more weight on my tailgate then I probably should and have dents in the inside of my tailgate where I slammed it against some cut up trees that I was hauling away. The dents were my fault not the trucks. All welds are fine.

If the ford people would have talked to me I might be driving a ford today but it was their sales department that made me choose a tundra not their trucks. I can say thanks to them because I have been very happy with my choice. Plus sometimes its fun to turn off the traction control and light up the tires- (Haven't done it with the Mich's I bought cost too much money - but I did send my bridgestones away with a smile.)

I unlike others will not bash the Ford truck because I have no experience with one but I am very happy with the Toyota.
