I have started a project to remove the sleeper sofa from my slide out and replace it with 2 recliners.. Once the couch was removed, I discovered 2 things.. the wall covering will be no problem as it already there as I suspect it was installed before the couch.. BUT with the sofa gone, the newly exposed slide floor area is bare appears to be a thin luan plywood.. the couch was mounted to the slide frame, not the slide floor.. Since the new chairs will sit on the slide floor, once covered, it must support much more weight in places it didn't previously. How thick of plywood should I cover this area with?? We won't walk on it, but must support chair bases. Second question is that once the floor is made stronger, how should the new small carpet section id want to put in (3 ft x 6 FT) be attached?? Glue, staples or tack strip?? Ideas would be appreciated...

The thickness of the plywood will be dictated by the spacing of the supporting structure underneath. If you have frame members at 16" centres 5/8" T&G plywood subfloor will be fine. You need to determine where the supports are.
As for the carpet, I would use a tack strip at the front edge and staple down the rest. That way if you want to change it later you won't have to fight the glue which would probably damage the sub-floor!

Will the 3 x 6 piece of carpet butt up against other carpet, or a tile/linoleum floor? If it is tile or linoleum then the seam between the two could be done with a floor molding available in any big hardware store. I would tack strip the rest. If it is carpet to carpet, then the two pieces of carpet have to be spliced together. There is a special glue strip/tape for doing that. For some reason I am thinking that glue strip is applied hot, but it has been awhile since we had any carpeting installed.

Pingerman, I have been contemplating doing the same thing. Are you encountering a problem with the slide mechanicals? I haven't taken mine apart yet but it seems that the slide mechanism might pose a problem. It wolud be great if you could post some pictures of your process and some info about how you deal with the slide mechanism.

I did the exact same thing as Pingerman... No problem what so ever with slide mechanism.. The floor (plywood)was plenty rigid over the slide metal works and then covered with self stick flooring strips.. The removed folding sofa was mounted to framing that was secured to the walls of the slide out, not the slide floor frame.

It sounds as though the process of removal was a relatively straight forward issue of taking out the nuts and bolts and carrying it out. Was it that straight forward? What did you replace the sofa with? Obviously concerned wit the weight?
