Would it be possible to get a smaller trailer and have the kids sleep in a tent... I know gasp....

How about on inflatable mattress on the floor, 1 or 2 sleeping in the truck??

For a family of 4 we camped in a VW camper for about 5 years....

Thy looking at things UNDER 22', while they may not be EXACTLY what you are looking for they will be better for what you are doing, 6 pax and a smallish TV.

You are in the right place to have your questions answered.... best of luck

Have you considered the expedtion? Tow capacity will be greater, and more room for kids. We pull a 5400 lb. trailer with ours. A good used expy will be no more than a new explorer. Just a thought.

What ^^^^ said.

or the Jeep GC is about the same size but pulls better I believe.

Here's a Lance 2185 with triple BH and slide, weighs 4330/590 hitch that could work.

I would rather have some width versus length in my TT the two seperate entrance/exits is nice also. the offer an optional convertible couch. as always best to see for yourself to get real world experience.

If your tongue weight VEHICLE spec is 500#, as I believe it is, you need to be careful. You want about 13% of the FULLY LOADED TT weight on the tongue. Thus the maximum FULLY LOADED TT weight is about 3800#. Most people seem to add about 1000# of weight over the UVW. If so, you need a UVW of about 2800# IMHO.

I rescind my TT option due to tongue weight issues, I looked at the explorers in 2010 and the numbers were better.

Maybe the TT's that trailmanor makes.

3000lbs/ 320 hitch. Will be tight but could work?

If you start looking at the numbers presented by Ford for the Explorer and those of the manufacturers for the trailers, and adjust them for the real world, you won't be happy.

Just 'cause something has a 'tow rating' of #5000 does not mean you can load that rig to the gills and just tow a #5000 (actual weight) TT like you were going to the store...

The new Explorer looks nice, but it's not what I'd call a 'tow rig'.. Sure, maybe a small boat or a single axle ATV hauler....

I have a #5000 TT and tow it with an F150 and I know it's back there and it gives the truck a good work out..

Good luck with your search and I hope it all works out the way you want..

Non-hybrid bunkhouse under 5000lbs for a family of 6 towing with an Explorer with a queen bed? Since you say no to a truck, how about a larger SUV? If you are set on the Explorer you will not find a TT that meet your desires.
Your TV's towing rating gets downgraded after loading it up with your family. If the 6 of you weigh 500 lbs than your TT should not exceed 4500lbs when you are ready to tow it.

I pull a Coachmen Catalina 21BH with triple bunks with a 2006 Yukon XL. Trailer is a little over 4,200 lbs dry. Max tow rating of 7,200 lbs on the Yukon. If you look at a Yukon XL, Surbuban, or Expedition I think you will find the tow rating a little higher.

I don't win any races. The trailer is small. That said the combination works well for my family of 5. You might consider a set up like this. Only difference for you is you would need to convert the dinette to a bed.

Forest River has a couple of models like this which weigh slighly less dry.
