I have a Honda 2000I gen and want to get a battery charger to help in charging batterys when boondocking instead of running power through the fifers' converter. I know I need a three stage charger but not sure of the power needed. Any suggestions on make, type or thoughts about this matter...Thanks

Why would you not want to use your trailer's converter/charger? Some of them are very good and you would be wasting money if you already have one. If not, replacing your bad converter with a good converter would make more sense. If that does not do the trick, THEN entertain a secondary charger.

This is sound advice.
You don't need a multistage charger to use with your generator. The idea when charging with the gen+charger is to charge about as fast as possible, so a manual single stage charger would do nicely.
A good multistage charging CONVERTER would be a good investment as it may be charging for long periods of time when hooked to shore power and that's when you need the multistages to prevent water loss and resultant damage.

Some consider this line (under B&D label too) to be apex for RV use.
Some seem to be able to charge their TV through their converters I guess.
Seriously there are many reasons to own a great stand alone battery charger. The Desulf Mode that comes on some of this line of chargers will boost battery life to pay for the charger over time. The Equalize Mode can really help too.

Get 40a but evaluate what your converter is doing before spending money.

Gale, can you help me with this? What do you mean?
The desulfation mode is a total joke on portable chargers, we all know that. Nobody is charging TV batteries through the converter. It can be done but does not make sense. There is no reason too unless during storage and then a Trik-l-start makes so much more sense.

I had a set of 4 DC-24 batteries on an UPS and run time tests had dropped from one hour to 30 minutes. Did 3 24 hour cycles on each one and got the run time back up to 45 minutes and used they nearly another year using some 1093 class chargers so I know the Desulf Mode works.

To answer the OPS first question the Black & Decker 40AMP Smart mode charger VEC1093DBD (Amazon.com) is a popular unit for RV use. I have a 2KW Honda EU2000i generator and it will operate the Black & Decker just fine if I want to plug it directly into the generator to charge my battery bank. The 2KW Honda generator also operates my PD9260C on-board "Smart Mode" Converter/Charger to charge my battery bank in 3-4 Hours of generator run time with the Trailer shore power cable directed connected to the 2KW Honda generator using a RV30A-15A adapter plug. I use the RV30A-15A Dual Honda Adapter PLug from Amazon.com which plugs into the the dual 120VAC Honda receptacle (both sides) to give a good connection.
I prefer to use the trailer on-board converter/charger when re-charging as I get the use of my 120VAC receptacle during the generator run time to make my fresh bean coffee or cook up something with the electric skillet while I am re-charging my batteries...
The trick for us is to re-charge our batteries everyday for 3-4 hours when camping off the power grid and we do just about everything we normally do at electric sites except we lose out on air conditioning and use of our high wattage microwave unit.
Works for us great doing it this way.
My Posts are IMHO based on my experiences - PM me

OFFLSTC by just following the Desulf Mode instructions you should see longer run times for your deep cycle batteries if you are experiencing decreasing run times by using that feature on one of these chargers with the feature. Do you own/using one?
There are good reasons to own a good portable three stage charger these days.
