I know this going to sound kinda weird and dumb, but does anyone know of an RV friendly campground in the northeast where you can fairly consistently hear whip-poor-wills at night? They are becoming more and more rare as each year goes by.
I would imagine most people find them annoying, keeping them up all night etc. My grandfather sure did on his farm in MD. I was told there was many a night that he threw his shoes out the window into a tree outside in an always foiled attempt to shut them up.
I like to record nature as a hobby and I’ve been unable to get these guys on tape. May is usually when they go-a-courtin’.
Good to go all over the Smoky Mtn Natl Park and local campgrounds in the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge TN areas... Music to my ears....
I got a couple of these CDs on-line and play them on outside speakers sometimes at camping in the woods sites and you would be surprised what shows up sometimes to see what this new bird is...Nature CDs

Smokies? Huh? Who’d have thought? My family and I go down there quite often. Never heard one. Night hawks yes. We always go down late August though. I’m sure that’s why we’ve never heard any. They’re probably all whipped and poor-willed out by then. LOL
Thank you much. I’m going to have to plan a trip down there in May. I would assume that’s the time they’d be barkin’ up a storm?
I am also anxious to know the answer. When our kids were small and we camped in the NJ State parks it was such a great sound to wake up to. There used to always be some around,but for a long time now we have not heard any. We thought we heard one while camping in the Lehigh Valley last month and it brought back many happy memories!

We love 56 T-Birds
Most any campground with a wooded area in Kansas has the birds. Generally they only do a LOT of calling in the spring time (mating season). They're all over the woods of the midwest in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas etc.
