I am not talking about the dead bolt but rather your main lock.
I unlocked the door and in pulling out the key the whole barrel assembly came out with the key still in it. Pushed it back in and every thing works.
How is that barrel assembly to be held in?

The last pin in the lock assembly holds it in the lock. When you pushed the key in, you pushed it just far enough and just at the right angle to pull down the last pin, and the whole lock assembly comes out. Thats how a locksmith changes the pins in a lock.
