I would guess he has major medical insurance but not the kind that you can just run to the doctor for every little sniffle.

That does sound like what he has, from this blog post: http://www.tosimplify.net/2011/10/health-insurance.html

For 5 years, until last March, I lived on about $800. Free place to stay on County property providing security and maintenence. No utility bills except the usual for underserved rural America..... phone for internet and satellite for TV. A major expense every month was fixing a 30yo motorhome and a 15yo car, as and $4-$5ga gas. Thanks to a previous employer, I was eligible for Kaiser's Steps Health Insurance for low income. No deductible, $5 copay, no maximum, first year $75mo. Monthly payment increased each year until final year 4 when it cost $320mo. During those years, I had several surgeries on my eyes totaling about $50,000 and my out of pocket totaled around $600. Pretty good for a 55yo. Program is now closed to any new applicants because of so called national health care reform.

If ya stay under a certain income level, you qualify for alot more subsidized things than if you work harder and earn more.

A friend of mine lives on around $800 a month from SSD + around a $100 from food stamps (which he gets in the cash form), but shares a 3 bedroom apartment with 5 people.

I wonder how his insurance is going to hold up if the Insurance purchase mandate under obamacare isn't killed, as I don't think High Deductible plans like his qualify as "Adequate" under the reform's wordings to wave off the tax penalty.

There has been a trend in recent years towards downsizing poeples lifestyles. Jay Shaffer of Tumbleweed Tiny Houses has lived in a 100sqft home for over a decade and lives on less then $15000 a year in california. I have been a fan of tiny homes for many years now...not much different then fulltime RV'ing really. There are a great many people living this way now...just google Jay Shaffer of tumbleweed tiny house, or The Tiny House Blog for more exsmples, or Dee Williams in Washington state....outstanding examples of living small on less...

Why is it that the first question that people have about a person living on 11,000 a year, is what about insurance. People with insurance die too. We have all become slaves to insurance co.I wonder how long it would take for premiums to come down, if every one canseled there policies tomorrow. Bank of America did not waste any time forgetting about fees, when one little gal said its my money and I'm not paying you to use it. Put your premiums in the bank, and insure yourself. Save 10% for paying cash.

There is a big difference between “surviving” and “thriving.” Living small also causes your world to become small. OK for a short time, if you have an exit plan.

Gonna have to respectfully disagree with you, there. Depends on what it takes to make your world big; lots of people find that taking to the road constitutes a world-enlargement.

Most poor people don't have a poverty exit plan anyway. Might as well go ahead and live.

Friend of ours had surgery. So far are up to $40,000 and the bills are still coming in. You have cash for that? This is why I have insurance.

I have to disagree here as well, there are a great many benefits from downsizing your lifestyle and not being a slave to objects anymore, it frees more time for family and friends, traveling, being able to give a little money to help family that may need a helping hand now and then...etc...etc...I truly think your world can become much bigger the smaller you go...just my opinion anyway.
