In DesertHawks excellent post in one of the links it mentioned the dangers of Juarez, all true. He futher mentions Polamas as a safer place to visit Mexico. This may or may not be true. They have had their share of problems also. One night the entire police dept. fled across the border to the US. There have been killings at the Pemex station and bodies have been found in the downtown plaza. A good friend of mine a promanate dentist was kidnapped a couple of years ago, still missing. All these incidents have been over the past few years. In Columbus NM the mayor, cheif of police and other top city officals have been indicted on gun running charges as well as a promanate gun dealer south of Demining. Many Americans stay in the excellent state park (Pancho Villa) in Columbus and cross the border daily without problem. It's just not for me at present. I don't want to be collateral damage.

I think the best burgers are at the Buckhorn Cafe as others have said. The Owl Cafe is about a block away and also has great burgers. These locations are about an hours drive South of I-40 but there is a twin to the Owl Cafe located in Albuquerque. It is located just North of I-40 on Eubank. It is not really big rig friendly but if you don't mind walking about a block you can park in the lot at Target which is located just behind the Owl Cafe. If you're not in for a burger, the best New Mexican food is located about a mile North of the Owl Cafe at a little "hole-in-the-wall" place called La Salita. Come to think of it, there are a lot of good places to eat on Eubank. I might just have to run out and get lunch today.

If you are planning on staying in Albuquerque at one of the RV Parks on the west side of town this little family owned restaurant is easy to get to with almost no traffic and then after you leave you can head to Wally world for your essentials!
The Albuquerque City Limits Restaurant is a favorite of ours! The Hamburgers are huge and they home make their fries!!! They use Hatch Chile for their green chile cheeseburgers! I like their guacamole green chile cheeseburger!!! Below is the map to City Limits!

Thanks for the suggestions. We will likely try either the Owl in Albuquerque of the Albuquerque City Limits. We will not be travelling off I40 this trip, but will note the other suggestions for the future. After trying the Whataburger chain in Texas, I would hesitate to try the Lotaburger chain.

Well, I won't go out and say that Lotaburger does a decent green-chili cheeseburger, but it is at least quite a bit different from Whataburger. Officially called Blake's Lotaburger, it started out with Blake flipping a few burgers for bucks in the back of his feed store in Albuquerque. (We used to buy grain there.) The feed store is gone, but there are bunches of Lotaburgers around NM.

Hatch Chile Rotisserie Chicken
I know that you are looking for Green Chile Hamburgers, but this may be the best meal that I have ever had in NM (Zea's in Albuquerque): 1/2 rotisserie chicken with Hatch chilies and etouffee sauce over roasted corn grits and red beans. Say goodnight, because you're done for the night.

It's been awhile since I've been up north but you might check out Del's Restaurant in downtown Tucumcari or Joseph's Restaurant in downtown Santa Rosa. Both serve excellent food! In Albuquerque, try the Mule Barn on north 2nd street (don't let the outside discourage you-food and service is excellent!). Have a great trip!

Whataburger and Lotaburger are completly different. Lotaburger is New Mexico only, serves only Angus beef, not bad burgers at all. There's just no way a fast food burger is going to be the same as one custom made. Big difference in price also. Lottaburger double meat green chile burger with large fries and drink about $7.00. Costom made at the restruan,t burger $9.00 everything else extra. Both a good value.
