Sorry to be a nonconformist, but I have a 2000 Ford E350 7.3 with 115k and a 2000 Ford Excursion 7.3 with 148k and an Edge Juice w/attitude programmer. Both have been used for towing and both have only had scheduled transmission maintenance and both work and tow great.

My previous two 3/4 ton Suburbans had their transmissions rebuilt before 100k.

I think you'll be very happy with that truck!

I would buy another 7.3 in a heartbeat. I REALLY like mine. I have a 2002 F250 4x4 with 240k+ miles that I bought new. It has been very dependable even with modifications (lift, 35" tires, DP Tuner (60tow, 80, 140), intake, exhaust) that some consider a negative. My transmission went at 230k. I replaced it with a BTS and 6.0 cooler. This has been the best modification I have made to the truck. It has never shifted this good. Trans temps are nice and cool and it tows great.

If the trucks maintenance is in good order I say go for it. You won't regret buying a 7.3.

Where are the weight police???

This guy wants to tow a 10,000 lb 5th wheel which is probably 2000 lbs pin weight. I only have about 1800 lbs left in mine after fuel fuel and this does not account for the hitch either.

Seriously, I love my engine, just turned over 100k and it is running strong. I did have the tranny rebuilt with shift kit, valve body, and larger capacity oil pan. Pulls much better now.

Cam position sensors have been updated and likely has been replaced under recall. I have not heard of any of the newer ones going bad yet.

Before you buy, crawl under the truck and check out the oil pan. You want to see zero rust on the oil pan. If it's quite rusty, that could be bad- you have to pull the motor to change it.

If it only has a bit of lighter rust, you can sand it down and apply POR-15 or similar to seal the pan and prevent (or at least greatly slow) further rust.
