I am in the position to purchase a new TV for my employer. I have been given free reign to pick and choose. I was leaning towards an F350 DRW, 6.7, Lariat but wondering if there is any significant advantage to going to an F450. First look tells me that the payload is actually less on the 450, plus mileage will be worse with the 4.30 gears. Anyone have a reason to go 450? Trailer is 45' gooseneck at about 17000 lbs. Thanks in advance.

If the rear axle weight doesn't exceed, I'd go with the 350; especially if there's a lot of highway towing.
Don't get me wrong, when I get on the throttle with the Cyclone behind, its amazing how well she gets up to speed. But I also think a 4.10 gear and even a 3.73 would be sufficient. My '09 F350 with the 3.73 pulled the Cyclone quite well before we traded it in.
I'm getting around 8 mpg at interstate speeds loaded down (28,000 lbs. total). I'm also getting close to 17 mpg (empty) on the 55 mph highways. But with a 4.10 or 3.73, it'd be even better.
Main reason I bought the 450 over the 350? 1. Selection: Dealer had 10 450s and two 350s. 2. I eventually plan to put an auxiliary tank in the bed and was trying to make sure the tank and heavy pinned Cyclone didn't exceed things.

Thanks for the info. From what I read off of the Ford spec page, payload is actually lower on the F450. Am I reading this right?

I would not expect the mileage to be worse necessarily. If you drive in areas that are limited to 55-60mph, being in higher trans gear will offset the lower rear end (you might be in 4th with the 3.73 rear gears, but with the 4.30, you might be in 5th or 6th) I doubt that you will run out of gears in trans for top speed with the 4.30 rear.

I really don't know why they made the 450 any longer. Your right looking at a spec sheet the 350 is just about the same as the 450. I don't know what Ford thinking was. Just a couple of years ago there was a noticeable difference between the two.

You're reading it correctly.
When Ford re-did the F450 here last year the result was a truck with less payload capacity than an F350, but more towing capacity.

The 2011+ F450 pickup is basically what used to be called the Tow Boss option for the 350, a F-350 with 4.30 gears. I think the current F-450 would be hard pressed to tow to the GCWR without exceeding GVWR. I was at 32,250lbs GCWR and still had a few pounds under the 9500lb rating of the rear axle but not by much. Luckily the Dana 110 axle is rated at 14,500lbs and I was well under the max rating for the four 19.5 tires so I had plenty of cushion.

What year is your truck? If you have 19.5 tires then I assume it is pre-2011 or chassis cab.

2008 F-450. I suspect, not only for less weight to gain some MPG, the other reason for dropping the Dana110 axle was torque limits of the axle. I read on Dana's website that the 110 and 130 axle are limimited to 600lbs of input torque, maybe why the cab chassis 6.7 is derated.

The 2011/12 F450 also has physically larger brakes compared to the 250/350.
