Have tried another Williamsburg park. Heritage this past weekend. Nice bathrooms but way too close to neighbors and kinda far from town. Trains. Yes
Anvil; never again. see trains above and so close it was hard to decide where the neighborline started
Newport news. Favorite. Great large scenic sites. No sewer hookup. Tolerable. Bathrooms; intolerable. Are any of the bathhouses better then others? We usually camp in B loop on the lake
Anyone been to the state park farm just across the ferry? Is the ferry a pain in the butt to wait for and schedule for
Any other suggestions? KOA's didn't look any better then heritage
Heritage is our favorite out of all the Williamsburg CGs even though the spaces are generally small. Some of the KOA's sites are small, too, but they are the most expensive as I recall.
2002 Keystone Cougar 286, 8,400lbs loaded, pulled with a 2004 F150 Supercrew, 5.4, 3.73 gears. Retired and enjoying life
We've done Heritage, the KOA's and the Pottery Factory CG. Heritage is our pick - trains there didn't bother us and the people that run the place were friendly, helpful.
Chippokes has large and level sites in loop b and a brand new clean bath house. There were 4 unisex seperate showers on the back and then your mens and womens on either side. Laundry facilities in front with the largest book exchange I've seen in a campground. Beautiful park with lovely views of the James River. Not sure about the ferry haven't done that yet. No sewer sights but there is a dump station.
We enjoyed American Heritage this past summer. The trip on 64 to the historic areas and attractions was not long at all - ten minutes (speed limit is posted 80). We were not bothered by the train noise, though we could faintly hear them. Sites are close together but that did not bother us either. We looked at several of the commercial campgrounds and this looked the best to us. We are going back to Heritage in December.
Any time waiting for a ferry is time lost - just my opinion.
We spend the weekend at American Heritage last November. I don't remember the driver being too long. I believe we heard the train one evening, but not too annoying. The sites were on the small side, but we spent most of the time seeing the area.

The ferry runs on the half hour until 9pm, that's when we arrived....9:01 pm...and saw the ferry leave the dock. An hour later it returned. If you plan ahead you'll be OK.
Also be aware Virginia State Parks charge $5.00/day for pets. We won't go back.
Heritage worked for us this past August. Hated our site right in front of the bath house because everyone cut thru. We would go back though and get a better site. Loved Williamsburg.
