I'm looking for DVR/PVR to record cable or over the air channels. I don't want Tivo I just want to be able to record and over write with another program. Just like a our sat. DVR.

If you have a computer you can add a TV tuner.
Here's a link to a thread discussing this issue:

Check out Walmart.com. Magnavox(Funi) has just what you are looking for. I have two in my coach but can't tell you the model number offhand.

DVRs are relatively inexpensive. All kinds and $s are in W-M, etc.

I know you said no Tivo, but used Tivo's can be had for $25 or less and will manually record w/o any subscriptions.

Just checked local Craigslist has series 2, for $30 & $40 a series 3 dual tuner for $75
I'm assuming these are analog Not digital and would have to be connected to cable or a converter Box
Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother

Series 2 is not digital. The Premiere and HD will take a tuner card, not sure about the series 3.

Panasonic DMR-E75V. I used one for years. The RAM disc feature allows you to record and watch a the same time.

Well.. Your options are kind of limited.. At one time there were two Stand Alone Hard Drive DVR's on the market.. TiVo and ReplayTV.. I choose ReplayTV cause at teh time it was years ahead of TiVo.. Still is the better of the two though most of the features that put ahead of the TiVo.. Well it's been years and TiVo has caught up... Problem is Replay did not make the switch to ATSC so no longer in production.
You can also get a number of DVD recorders.. These come in two flavors, The Pioneeer my wife lost the remote to records DIRECT to DVD (or rather did .. W/o Remote I can't program it) Some record to hard drive then optinally to DVD. Assorted makes and models, Visit Best Buy or Fry's or some other big electronics place.
Finally. You have a computer.. WIN-TV (I think the company is Hauppauge) you can actually get ReplayTV PC edition.. Records to your computer's hard drive. Some of the systems let you play back on TV's.. Some do not,, Alas, ReplayPC edition is not compatable with ReplayTV stand-alones without additional user input and since I do not have PC edition I've never tried that.
Just thinking though... I might try it with my Tuner card from the analog days.
To be honest though.. OF the DVR's on the market now.. TiVo is really your only choice save for the DVD type.
