Brookings, OR is known as the "bananna belt". Residents claim unusually pleasant weather. We spent 3 days there this summer. Found it somewhat boring after the first day.

We stayed in Gold Beach from May untill mid way thru October this year. We are in central California now visiting for a week and then heading further south. The southern Oregon coast in the winter is wet and windy, can get chilly and can get a little snow on ocassions. A lot of people like to storm watch but it's not everyones cup of tea.
Winter is winter...but certainly the southern Oregon Coast will not be like your Minnesota winters..
Whenever we have been there in the winter it was wet and windy and overcast...but not as radical as the more northern Coast area. Brookings and Gold Beach where we stayed are 'ok' towns, but we felt isolated there after awhile.

If you are hoping for dry and warm weather in the winter on the California coast, you will have to go south of Monterey, at least. Probably Cambria, near Hearst Castle, is where the weather gets a little less "Northwestish." Still quite windy and cool, but not very rainy.
Or head down to Santa Barbara -- that is where the REAL Southern Calif. winter weather begins -- more sunshine than in the summertime! The days are usually in the 60s, with nights in the 50s. And the waves are great, as long as you have a good wetsuit/hood/booties/gloves. (Or if you are from Minnesota, just pack your swim trunks. The water is in the low 50s -- bathwater warm.)

Brookings has the best weather on the southern Oregon Coast. And it is a very good home base if you like to hike. The town is fairly small, and there isn't too many shops. Harris SP is wonderful. You can explore the redwoods, the trails along Boardman SP and some nice beaches, but I don't think you really want to stay more than a week there.

I am a full timer from TN. I am planing a trip to the North-West. Since it so far and with the price of fuel, I am think about making it a 2 year trip. This would put me spend a Fall(?) Winter and Spring(?) on the WA/OR coast.
Where is the "best" place to storm watch ????..
Please give me enough troubles, uncertainty, problems, obstacles and STRESS so that I do not become arrogant, proud, and smug in my own abilities, and enough blessings and good times that I realize that someone else is in charge of my life.
