My empty water tank gets frozen solid numerous times during the winter. It also gets filled and drained 6-8 times during the camping season. Does that count as sanitization? Seriously, I don't worry about it.

My Coach originally came equipped the EverPure ADC filtration system. Many places I travel have well water and one never knows if it has been contaminated.

Cryptosporidium parvum is considered to be the most important waterborne pathogen in developed countries. It is resistant to all practical levels of chlorination, surviving for 24hrs at 1000 mg/L free chlorine

Giardia cyst can survive for weeks to months in cold water, and therefore can be present in contaminated wells, water systems, and mountain streams. They may also occur in city reservoirs and persist after water treatment, as the cysts are resistant to conventional water treatment methods such as chlorination and ozonolysis.

In those days when a kid could get 2 tootsie rolls for a penny or 2 tootsie pops for a nickel I would take any bet to eat a handful of dirt for a quarter.
My hand was much smaller then..

Drinking and cooking water is filtered in our fiver to .5 microns. That's to virus levels. If nothing else, it makes me feel better. $100 well spent.

Bacteriology labs use 0.22 micron filters to sterilize water. 0.5 microns will do a pretty good but not complete job. AFAIK there are no commercial filters that are able to remove viruses but their are chemical treatments that do.

Yep believing that even .5 micron gets to virus is wishful thinking and misinformed. THIS lists virus micron sizes in the .005 to .3 micron ALL of which are smaller than .5 micron.

A lot of bottled water is just city tap water. Also you should see what comes out of a fire hydrant when they are tested twice a year (socks, tools, gloves, shoes, rocks, mud and other things I am not sure what they are. So the OP photo of a dirty tank looks good compared to what I have seen and drank.

I try to NOT think of what the upstream towns are dumping into the river, not to mention what the cows, horses, deer, antelope, elk, bears, prairie dogs, ducks and geese are doing in the water...
and the fish. Mustn't forget the FISH!

Boil the water and this will destroy everything these animals put into the water. BUT don't forget that many hormones, including those found in birth control and ed drugs are excreted and go through waste treatment systems and eventually into the rivers and lakes which many cities and towns get their drinking water from.
