My DW and I have just made plans to travel to the Great Tetons and Yellowstone in late June and early July 2012.
I have just made reservations with Grizzly Campground outside the west gate of Yellowstone.
I know it will be crowded but I have been told that if you get up early you can get into the park without any major issues and see lots of the animals.
I have also heard that if you go in later in the day aroun 11AM and get to your farthest point and work back west you will find less people at the sites in the afternoons and early evenings.
I have heard about mosquitos are a problem in June and July of 2011.Just womdered if that is a year happening no matter what or is it when the temps warm up enough to hatch all the eggs from the year before?
Anyone else planning the 4th of July in Yellowstone?
More information about the Tetons and Yellowstone would be helpful.

We've been there twice and stayed at Grizzly. It has the amenities you're looking for and in addition it's a short walk to a car rental office and a large grocery store while being a short drive into the park's west entrance. There are restaurants close enough to walk to also. My grandson is after me to take him back again next summer and we might just do it. You never get enough of Yellowstone once you've been there; you'll want to go back.

With only 10-12 days and since you said you have already been to South Dakota, my suggestion would be to pickup US-20/26 at Casper, WY and take US-20 to Thermopolis. There are hot springs and a public bath house at Hotsprings State Park, a Dinosaur Museum and the Legend Rock Petroglyph Site.
From Thermopolis take WY-120 to Cody. Cody has the Buffalo Bill Museum Complex and a nightly Rodeo. For a day trip you can drive the Chief Joseph and Beartooth Highway scenic byways with a stop in Red Lodge, MT before returning to Cody.
From Cody, head to Yellowstone and then Grand Teton. After Grand Teton, take US-191 South to I-80 and head back to Nebraska.
No matter what route you decide to take, I hope you and the kids have a Great Trip!!
Safe travels!

Whether you stay at Colter Bay or not, be sure to allow a few days for Grand Tetons National Park. On our trip we saw more wildlife in GTNP than in Yellowstone and the scenery is spectacular. Also lots to do in GTNP

We were in Yellowstone at the end of July 2011 and loved it. I didn't think the crowds were bad at all. A don't miss place is the hike down to the brink of the waterfalls. The hike back up the series of switchbacks might be taxing for little kids, but they have several benches along the path, or you could walk the 3/4 mile trail to the brink of the upper falls. It is definitely worth the effort. I also second the Boiling River. The Grand Prismatic Spring is incredible. In a weeks time we drove 350 miles within the park. We would be in the park by 6:00 am for great animal spotting.

We went to Yellowstone the middle 2 weeks in June 2008 and the last 2 weeks of June 2010. The crowds were not bad at all either time. In 2008 we stayed at the KOA west of West Yellowstone. It is expensive as most KOAs are but it had an indoor pool and a great playground. In 2010 we stayed at Grizzly. It also has a nice playground. I would recommend both RV parks. The mosquitoes were horrible in 2010. You might want to be prepared for that. The town of West Yellowstone has a museum and the Grizzly Bear Center. Be sure to drive to the North Gate and see the entrance. The little town there is cute too. I can't remember the name (Gardner maybe). We saw every geyser and waterfall both times. If you have time be sure to drive to the Tetons. You won't be disappointed. We took our lunch sometimes and ate out others. The park is huge and by the time we got back to camp we were too tired to fix dinner! There are a lot of inns with restaurants that aren't too expensive. They aren't cheap, just affordable. Yellostone is the most beautiful place on earth!
Live each day as though it were your last!
